Uluwatu

When travelling to Bali the “Mecca” for surfers has to be Uluwatu. Famed for years for its consistent left-handed wave non-surfers can also appreciate this chilled out spot featuring bars and warungs (restaurants) that hug the cliff face. The famous Uluwatu Temple is just to the south of the main part of Uluwatu.

While it’s definitely a spot for older kids, the stairs are very steep and it’s not pram friendly, older kids will love the higgledy-piggledy nature of the cliff and all the little gems you can find along the way. The stairs lead you down into a cave with a beach (it’s a very long way down so you have to be fit for the trek back up) and this is where the surfers paddle out from. There is also a “sun lounge for hire” platform on the rocks if that’s more your style.

Uluwatu

The most popular bar at Uluwatu has to be Single Fin. Touted as having the best Sunday session on the island it’s popular every night for sunset. We like to grab a drink there (or at one of the smaller bars underneath) before dinner as it kicks off after sunset and becomes quite busy. If you’re there with kids I recommend reserving a booth out on the deck so they can have a bit more space. There’s plenty of quiet restaurants underneath which have views that are just amazing.

Bali traffic being what it is it is a good idea to stay the night if you’re based in Kuta/Seminyak. Blue Point Villa & Spa is a favourite of ours. They do not have family rooms unfortunately so you will have to book side-by-side rooms but you won’t’ be spending much time in the room! The infinity pool is set on top of the cliff, overlooking the world-class surf break and Single Fin (if there’s a featured band playing you get front row!).

The breakfast has to be one of the best locations on the island, though be careful of the resident monkeys if eating alfresco!

Uluwatu

Uluwatu is located at the south-western tip of the island and is a must-see for any traveller.
