Torndirrup National Park, Albany

A trip to Albany isnโ€™t complete without visiting the spectacular natural tourist attractions at Torndirrup National Park. Thereโ€™s The Gap,ย The Natural Bridge and The Blowholes.ย ย

There areย manmadeย lookouts at both The Gap and Natural Bridge, which provide stunning views of the Southern Ocean, where you can seeย rightย along the coast from Bald Head to West Cape Howe.ย

The raised pathway begins at the car parkmaking itย stroller and wheelchair friendly.ย Itโ€™s a very short stroll to both The Gap and Natural Bridge through theย exposed graniteย boulders.ย It almost looked like weโ€™re on the moon, the landscape is so barren.ย ย

At The Gap, you can seeย through the pathway, making it exciting to walk on when the lookoutย goesย outย over the rockย edge.ย The grated floor gives glimpses to the sea crashing below.ย

The viewing platform is 40 metres directly above the surging seas at The Gap,ย whereย theย massive waves crashย against the cliff wall as the surging tide of the Southern Ocean shows allย ofย its fury.ย

If you walk for 2 minutes in the other direction, youโ€™ll come to the lookout point for the equally stunningย Natural Bridgeย rock formation. These rocks were formed many millions of years ago when Australia and Antarctica collided.ย

For a busy tourist attraction, I was surprised to find there are no public toilets.ย The closestย toilets can be found nearby at Frenchman Bay.ย

Another spot to check out is the Blow Holes,ย a short driveย up the road.ย These are quite impressive, but not for young children, as the walk is quiteย long. It took us around 15 minutes from the carpark. There are lots ofย steepย steps, and there is no safety fencingย at the blow holesย either.ย Iโ€™d recommend standing on the upper side of the blow holes and not get tooย close.

Torndirrup National Park, AlbanyOn the day we visited the sea wasย a little rough, so every few seconds there wasย a rush of water into the rockย cavernย below us andย we heard anย eerie hissing sound and a rush of windย through the holesย that would knock your hat off! On very rough daysย you’llย be lucky to seeย a jet of water shoot up into the air.ย Theย blowholes can spray water over 3m high.

Also in the area is Discovery Bay, a brilliant attraction that is about Albanyโ€™s whalingย history. At Discovery Bay there areย alsoย Australian animals and beautiful botanical gardens.ย

It is $17 for a day pass for Torndirrup National Park, payable at the ticket machines found in the car park.
