Looking for something free, fun and genuinely meaningful to do with your kids this June? Noongar Songs & Stories for Young Children at Wanneroo Regional Museum is a weekly gem that we’re already reorganising our schedule to attend again.

Perfect for children aged 2 to 8, this beautiful program is all about singing, learning and connecting with Noongar culture — and grown-ups can learn right alongside their little people, too. It’s run by Tamara and Brenton Tucker of Yalkarang Consulting, a proud 100% Aboriginal-owned and operated family business.

Tamara Tucker (Lewis) is a proud Yamatji Noongar woman, born and raised on Noongar country. Brenton Tucker is a proud Wongatha man who moved to Perth as an adult. Together, they bring deep cultural knowledge, lived experience and a passion for early childhood education to every session — and you can feel the care and cultural pride in every part of the program.

We attended our first session today and were absolutely blown away. Brenton welcomed each child with ‘Kaya’ (hello), then led us through a morning full of song, story, movement and laughter. The session was thoughtfully paced, with just the right balance of repetition, visuals and hands-on learning to keep even the youngest kids engaged.

We learnt:
 • Noongar words for body parts through a lively version of Heads and Shoulders
 • Emotions like birki-birki (silly), using expressive faces
 • Colours and animal names like dwert (dog), djoowi (owl), yongka (kangaroo) and wetj (emu), matched with toy animals
 • Rhythmic clapping using traditional clapping sticks

We also shared a group reading of That’s Not My Yongka (Kangaroo), with everyone enthusiastically joining in for the ‘That’s not my yongka!’ refrain. My son Kai especially loved acting out the animal movements and showing off his best silly face.

What makes this session special:
 • Interactive and engaging — singing, movement, storytelling, visuals and hands-on fun
 • Repetition and rhythm to support language learning and memory
 • Cultural richness shared in a joyful, accessible way
 • Led by experienced Aboriginal educators who truly connect with kids
 • A warm, welcoming atmosphere where everyone is included and valued
