Located in Leeming, south of the river, Melville Jumbo Golf at Melville Golf Centre offers a fun, familyโfriendly twist on traditional golf. If your kids find a full-size course overwhelming or regular mini golf a bit too simple, this โinโbetweenโ option is a great way to get everyone outside and laughing together.
Jumbo Golf plays on a nine-hole parโthree short course, complete with fairways and greens like regular golf, but on a smaller, more manageable scale. Instead of tiny balls and slim clubs, you use larger, softer plastic golf balls and real golf clubs, which makes it much easier for beginners and children to connect with the ball. Itโs a brilliant introduction to golf for kids and a relaxed way for adults to have a hit without taking the game too seriously.

On arrival, youโll head to the pro shop to check in and collect clubs, balls and a scorecard. Clubs are available in both adult and kidsโ sizes, and everything you need for your round โ including buggies โ is provided in the Jumbo Golf price. The pro shop also sells refreshments, and this is where youโll find the toilets, so itโs worth a quick pit stop before you head out onto the course.

Each buggy is set up with four different clubs: a large โbig boyโ driver for teeing off, a regular club known as โthe strikerโ, a wedge for those tricky lies and getting a bit of lift, and a โputtaโ for when you reach the green. The course itself is grassy and gently hilly, with very little shade, so be sure to bring hats, sunscreen and water, especially on warm days.

The holes are all relatively short, so youโre not standing around for ages waiting to take your shot. That keeps the game moving and works well for younger kids with shorter attention spans.

Donโt be fooled into thinking itโs too easy, though โ Jumbo Golf here is still a proper challenge. There are bunkers, bushes, slopes and other obstacles to contend with, and balls can easily end up nestled under trees or in clumps of plants, adding to the fun (and occasional mock frustration!).

Because the equipment is designed to be more forgiving, it tends to level the playing field between experienced golfers and complete beginners. Confident golfers might find their usual skills donโt always translate perfectly with the oversized balls, while kids and less experienced players will often surprise themselves with how well they can hit. It all makes for plenty of laughs and friendly competition, and itโs common for families to finish with very close scores.

Melville Golf Centre itself is a complete golfing complex, so if you have keen golfers in the family, you can easily extend your visit beyond Jumbo Golf. Thereโs a fully floodlit 250m+ driving range where you hit off real grass (no mats), a large practice putting green and a chipping and bunker area. The centre also offers professional coaching with a PGA pro, so older kids or parents who get hooked on the game can book lessons to work on their swing.

Jumbo Golf is very popular for birthday parties, school holiday catch-ups and team-building events. The venue has complimentary BBQ facilities, and as a fully licensed venue (no BYO alcohol), adults can relax with a drink after the game while the kids run around. Bookings are recommended, especially for groups and weekends, to make sure you secure a tee time.

With easy access from the freeway and plenty of on-site parking, Melville Jumbo Golf is a convenient, active and screenโfree outing for families. Whether youโre introducing your children to golf for the first time or just looking for a relaxed way to spend a couple of hours outdoors together, this short course offers a โholeโ lot of fun in the southern suburbs.
