The Esplanade Playground in Fremantle is a much-loved family stop, perfectly positioned on Marine Terrace opposite the Esplanade Hotel and only a short stroll from Fishing Boat Harbour and the Cappuccino Strip. Set within Esplanade Parkโs sweeping lawns and towering Norfolk Island pines, itโs an easy place to base yourself for a few hours in Freo โ kids can burn off energy while parents relax in the shade or grab a takeaway coffee nearby. The Playground sits in the middle of Esplanade Park, a large public reserve thatโs also home to the Esplanade Youth Plaza skate park and the Fremantle ferris wheel, known as the Skyview Wheel. The whole area is popular for picnics and community events, and thereโs plenty of room for kids to run around on the grass before or after a play on the equipment.

The main Playground caters particularly well for babies, toddlers and younger primary school children. A low-level play structure and low swing make it easy for crawlers and new walkers to join in the fun, with gentle steps, a small lookout platform and a slide that isnโt too intimidating for first-timers. The soft woodchip base underfoot helps cushion little tumbles, and the entire area feels nicely contained, so itโs easier to keep an eye on curious explorers. The surrounding trees provide good natural shade at many times of the day, and there are a couple of benches close enough to sit while your child plays.

Swing lovers are well looked after, with several different options grouped together. Thereโs a toddler bucket swing, a high-back swing suitable for babies or children needing extra support, plus standard belt swings for older kids.

To one side youโll also find a large birdโs nest swing that works well for siblings to share or for parents to hop on with little ones.

A chunky see-saw nearby adds to the classic Playground feel, and the linked wooden walkways mean children can move between the different play elements without constantly hopping on and off the mulch.

Children who enjoy climbing and testing their balance will find plenty to challenge them. The main structures are joined by wooden bridges, various styles of steps and platforms, along with monkey bars and a flying fox that are popular with confident school-aged kids.

For more adventurous climbers thereโs a tall spider-web style rope frame leading up to a partly enclosed curved slide, accessed via a rope bridge. This offers a bit more excitement and height without feeling extreme, making it a great stepping stone before tackling the bigger challenges at the neighbouring Esplanade Youth Plaza.

Facilities around the Playground make it easy to settle in for a longer visit. While there are no dedicated picnic tables or barbecues within the immediate play area, the expansive grass and shaded spots under the Norfolk pines are ideal for laying out a picnic rug. Public toilets are located on the edge of the park, within a short walk, and there is a water fountain close by for refilling drink bottles. Esplanade Park itself offers comfortable seating scattered under the trees if you want a break from supervising on the mulch. Parking is available along Marine Terrace and surrounding streets โ itโs pay-and-display, so remember to allow enough time on your ticket if youโre planning to explore Fremantle afterwards.

Food and coffee are easy to find. Beyond the park, youโre spoilt for choice with the eateries of Fishing Boat Harbour, Essex Street, High Street West End and the famous Cappuccino Strip all within walking distance, making it simple to combine a play with an ice cream, lunch, or an early family dinner.
One of the big drawcards of this location is how much there is to do nearby for different ages. Right next door is the award-winning Esplanade Youth Plaza, a large skate and scooter plaza with street-style skating features, climbing elements, parkour and slackline areas, along with regular skate and parkour workshops during school holidays. This space is ideal for tweens and teens while younger siblings enjoy the traditional Playground, and families can easily move between the two.

Also in the park is the Skyview Wheel (Fremantle ferris wheel), which offers fantastic views over Fishing Boat Harbour to Rottnest Island and back towards the Perth hills, plus historical points of interest such as the Explorersโ Monument. From the Playground itโs only a short walk to Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour and Fremantle Markets, so you can easily turn a quick play into a full family day out in Freo.

Whether youโre visiting for a couple of hours or spending the whole day exploring Fremantle, itโs almost impossible to pass through with kids and not stop at the Esplanade Playground. The combination of shaded play equipment for little ones, more adventurous climbing and sliding options for bigger kids, toilets and water close at hand, and endless food and coffee options nearby make it a reliable favourite for local families and visitors alike.
