What is great about non-sand playgrounds?
Not all kids love sand, just as not all parents and carers may not love it either. Sometimes it’s a sensory preference. Sometimes it’s that you don’t want your toddler constantly trying to eat the sand. And sometimes it’s just that you don’t want to feel like you’re cleaning half a sandpit out of your car or your kids shoes. 😛
In addition, we’ve added details of where playgrounds are close to local coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. Therefore you can grab a bite to eat before or after your play, or grab a takeaway coffee on the way. Don’t forget your reusable coffee mug! 😉

After over four years in the making, the 9 million dollar redevelopment of Shirley Strickland Reserve is complete! The dog-friendly sporting reserve is now home to a state-of-the-art Sport and Community Pavilion, a fantastic nature playground, fitness equipment and cycle/walking paths. The main feature of the playground is the enormous wooden multilevel climbing structure with a bright lime green slide. At our weekly shop on Saturday we were very excited to see that Floreat Forum shopping centre has just opened a new playground in the outdoor area by the cafes/restaurants. Previously there had just been a couple of small things for toddlers to play on but now there is a proper playground complete with shade sails. Features of Floreat Forum playground include a little ‘café’ with a table and chairs and a counter, complete with prices on a board at the front. Burswood Park is located on the river near the Crown Hotel complex. You access it from Glenn Place and there is parking provided. If the small parking area near the park is full, there is other parking available within easy walking distance. It is a lovely park with manicured gardens, lots of open space and great views. The playground is fully fenced and has good shade cover from the beautiful old tree in the middle of the playground and the surrounding trees. We have been excitedly watching the brand new Halesworth Park in Butler near completion for weeks and today we finally got the chance to explore this brilliant new addition to Perth’s far northern suburbs! Located on the north-west corner of Leatherback Oval in Alkimos Beach is a brand new Bike Safety Course that is sure to be a hit with kids of all ages! It features a realistic layout of Perth’s streets that gives children aged 4-11 years old hands on opportunities to learn pedestrian and bike travel safety skills. On the hunt for a post-breakfast play spot in Wanneroo, I found myself spoilt for choice. Preferring to steer away from much-loved Rotary Park after a recent school holidays visit to Café Elixir, my toddler and I ended up at nearby Nyunda Park on Nannatee Way. The playground’s softfall was replaced in late 2022 and the play equipment is all relatively new. The town of Williams is a good place to stop if you are on a road trip heading to/from Denmark or Albany. We recently stopped here on the way back from Denmark and found the quick park stop really helped to burn some energy and break up the journey. The Fremantle Esplanade Playground and surrounding space cater for all ages. It is situated on Marine Terrace, opposite the Esplanade Hotel. The playground is surrounded by huge Norfolk Island Pines and green grass making it a great spot for a picnic. The playground has a low-level play structure and low swing which are perfectly suited to crawlers or toddlers. The structure has steps, lookout platform and a slide. Jubilee Reserve, Eden Hill Jubilee Reserve is a multi-use reserve with a great playground located in Eden Hill. With play equipment suitable for toddlers to tweens, this shaded, sand-free playground is sure to be a hit. On arrival, Miss 4.5 bolted straight for the climbing ropes. A large arched climbing structure with rope ladders, a climbing wall and rubbery platforms with a huge winner with my Miss and a 7 year old girl. Stretton Way Reserve, situated behind Kenwick Village and is one of the shadiest parks I have seen. Shade sails cover the climbing equipment as well as the BBQ area making it good for summer outings. The play equipment has an excellent variety of play equipment including three slides, monkey bars, balancing equipment, various levels of climbing structures, and a basketball hoop. Have you heard of the OneOneFive Hamilton Hill development? It’s located on the former site of Hamilton Hill High School and it’s got some amazing play spaces. They’ve combined nature, water, accessibility, and paths through native bushes to create a fun and beautiful environment for everyone to enjoy. Pioneer Park is an unusual playspace situated next to the Canning River in Gosnells. The playground is below street level and you enter via a ‘tree top’ long walkway which is pram friendly and great fun for scooting down. Did you know that there’s a nature play area in the Perth foothills suburb of Bushmead. While it’s much smaller than the estate’s “Giant Park”, the simple Ridge Hill Green Nature Playground can provide plenty of entertainment for children that love to be in the great outdoors and love to climb. The Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space is an amazing park purpose built for all ages and abilities. Carefully built around and under existing trees, covering 10,000sq m with wheelchair access throughout, a sensory garden, flying fox, climbing obstacles, slides, swings, picnic areas, water play, toilet facilities and fully fenced… it certainly ticks all the boxes!!! A few years ago I wrote the original blog on Pioneer Avon Park, which is located on banks of Avon River in York, fast forward to 2020 the park is unrecognisable! The playground is nature-based and features recycled timber seating throughout, sheltered picnic tables, BBQs, toilets and plenty of shade! The new Tomato Lake all-abilities playground has opened and it appears to be a big hit as it was very busy when we visited. The playground is in front between the cafe and the bbq picnic area. The bbq area has also been refreshed with new picnic tables. The playground has been designed to suit toddlers through to older kids, including those with disabilities. Gibbon Park, Mosman Park Gibbon Park is the latest nature playground in Mosman Park. This park includes a mix of nature play elements and traditional play equipment that’s sure to satisfy active children! On arriving Miss 6 raced straight for the traditional play equipment first. Manning Park in Spearwood is the perfect spot to take the kids out for a picnic and play in the park. The reserve is huge with four car parks in total and plenty of wide open grassed areas. The playground itself is quite amazing, plenty for all ages, stages and abilities. There are shade sails over each section and plenty of trees to pull up under too. Neil Hawkins Park in Joondalup is a park more suited to the under 5’s. The playground is partially enclosed and is quite compact and easy to keep track of little ones. It features play equipment in the guise of a train engine and its carriages with each carriage providing a different feature. The train engine houses a small slide which is great for crawlers and early walkers. Mariala Vista Park is located in Jindowie, Yanchep. So many of the new parks that have been built recently have a problem with serious lack of shade, where the developer has planted trees but they won’t provide any shade until they mature in years to come. Willespie Park is a great little playground located in Pearsall, the playground isn’t fenced but is situated away from any roads. Willespie Park includes a good sized playground with equipment to suit a range of children. Unfortunately, the playground isn’t shaded so bring along sunscreen and a hat. The play equipment includes a tall corkscrew slide, a smaller wavy slide, noughts and crosses, a coloured ball Abacus, crawling tunnel, monkey bars, flying fox, balancing beam, ladders and a wooden bridge. Perry Lakes Rope Playground is located on Perry Lakes Drive, near the corner of Meager Drive. The playground is fully fenced and gated, and I feel it would be more suited to children aged three years and older who have more strength to climb and balance. Hillcrest Park in Bayswater now has a new playground nestled on the edge of the oval between the Jamison-Frame Pavilion and the cricket practice cages. The first thing we noted at Hillcrest Park was the base is not sand. A definite plus if you don’t want sandy little feet in your car afterwards! Miss 4 went straight the platform stairs to then explore the top layer of the playground. In amongst all the shiny office buildings in West Perth is Totterdell Park. The leafy inner city park is made up of a soft fall play area with a large metal play frame that features two slides, “shop” window, climbing nets, ramps, monkey bars, a climbing wall and more. There is also a see-saw and fun nest swing too. This play area isn’t covered by shade sails, though the park is surrounded by mature trees, giving a little afternoon shade. Cracknell Park in Rivervale is a small park with lots to offer and it has recently had an upgrade to the play equipment. It is a small park with amazing river views, a basketball hoop, ping pong table and a good area of grass. There is a picnic bench near the play equipment. Calleya Playground is an awesome playground located in Stocklands Calleya Estate in Banjup. There are 2 slides, including a very high twisty one for the brave and a smaller hill slide. A highlight of Calleya Playground is the 2 in-ground trampolines, they are very popular with kids of all ages and not something that you normally come across in a playground. It has 2 sets of swings. Ashfield Reserve Play Space Ashfield Reserve Play Space in Perth’s eastern suburbs is a hidden gem. Sharing the parkland with Ashfield Oval, this spot has something for all ages. We dropped in for a play during school holidays to burn off some energy. This was a great spot for it, too! Miss 5 enjoyed that there is lots to climb at Ashfield Reserve Play Space. Birdwood Square in the City of Vincent has had a major upgrade, transforming it into an inner-city gem for families. This new edition to the existing Mills Park Playspace and Skate Plaza is fully fenced and double gated which is also great for younger children. A good amount of the enclosed playground area is covered by shade sails and there are also a few seating options for parents too. Brown Park is a grassy park with shady trees and a playground covered by shade sails set among the leafy streets of Mosman Park. It’s a spot that’s sure to have something to appeal to everyone. Just off Ocean Reef Road, there’s a fantastic playground found at Edgewater Park in Edgewater! There’s many fun elements to this playground including a traditional play structure and a little nature play too. And good news if you’ve just cleaned your car… there’s no sand! Found next to the Edgewater Shopping Centre, there’s plenty of parking and facilities here. The IGA makes it handy to grab a drink or snack to enjoy in the park. Promenade Park is tucked amongst apartment buildings in Burswood. It has recently been updated with new playground equipment. We stopped by for a play recently and found it had a lot of different activities to keep little ones occupied. There were a number of board activities such as a word search, ball maze and line up 4 which added extra interaction and different activities to the usual playground equipment. Harbour View Park is a partially fenced toddler friendly playground in Hillarys. The playground consists of a boat inspired climbing frame, with small ladders, a rock climbing wall, enclosed slide, steering wheel and speaking tube. The rubber softfall flooring is perfect for my toddler who is a sand eater. Other equipment includes two white rocking horses, and a set of swings, with one toddler swing and one normal swing.
