We’ve seen many new all-abilities parks open up recently with some impressive play equipment, features and facilities. Best of all, they’re all FREE and they’re for EVERYONE!

The wonderful thing about all abilities playgrounds is they are designed for all children. This means kids living with a variety of disabilities, sensory issues and more can enjoy playing too. Because why should they miss out?
Enjoy wheelchair friendly, ramps, swings and roundabouts. Delight the senses with musical play or water play, or kids can get hands-on in mud kitchens or with sand tables with their friends.

OPTUS STADIUM SENSORY PLAYGROUND – Smack in between the Camfield and the new bridge at Stadium park at Optus Stadium you will find a fully fenced sensory playground. The Caterpillar Playground is a favourite amongst families in Mandurah. Parents love it due to the fact it is enclosed and kids love it because there is so much to do. Also known as Milgar Street Reserve, the Caterpillar Playground is easily accessible via Park Road with plenty of parking available. Access is also available via Reserve Drive for those on foot. Piney Lakes Reserve Sensory Play Park in Winthrop is located on Murdoch Drive just off Leach Highway. As you walk through the main entrance of the playground there is a lighthouse painted by local artist Brenton See overlooking the sand and water play areas. Previously known as Orange Grove Community Reserve, Boyle Lane All Abilities Playground is the NEWest playground that has received a $242,000 upgrade from the City of Gosnells in Orange Grove. Located at the intersection of Boyle Lane and Maddington Road, this fully fenced inclusive play space might be on the smaller scale, but it has all the sensory play elements and equipment for kids of all ages to enjoy and makes a good pit-stop to let the kids loose when you are around the area. Located across from the WA Museum Boola Bardip is the Perth Cultural Centre Playspace, a quirky little play space which has a heavy focus on sensory play. The Playspace is fully fenced and gated and it is open daily from 8am – 7pm. Edwardes Park Nature Playground is an extension to the existing small playground and sits adjacent to a large oval. Made from recycled material it makes a nice addition to the suburban area and utilises material from the Henderson waste treatment facility. Edwardes Park Nature Playground features a double flying fox including one to suit disabled children with an access ramp. This spacious playground is nested beside rows of mature trees, providing scenic greenery, and playing in the park feels like you’re right next to nature. The UFO-inspired Bob Gordon Reserve Play Space is out-of-this-world fun! The fully fenced playground features everything from UFOs, swings, flying foxes, slides, and water play to all the essentials like toilets, BBQs, picnic shelters, shade and ample parking. The main feature and the inspiration for the playground is the replica of the old Leach Highway Spaceship, Futuro House, which I’m sure parents and grandparents from the 70s and 80s will remember fondly! Wow, wow, wow! Shipwreck Cove park in Golden Bay, has totally nailed it! What a fantastic family space and visually it looks stunning! A beautiful green parkland along Golden Bay foreshore, right next to the Indian Ocean. The shipwreck themed park has a playground including a separate fenced area for toddlers, a cool pump track, a cycle and scooter circuit, BBQs, shaded picnic tables, toilets, showers, lots of parking, a stunning new lookout point and beach access. Hyde park, an inner city park which boast a pretty awesome playground. It is situated on the corner of Vincent and Throssell Street, North Perth. The playground is perfect for kids of all ages and abilities. The main playground resembles a castle where kids can let their imagination run wild, pretending to be knights and princesses running amok around the castle. I’ve recently rediscovered Woodbridge Riverside Park and I think it’s great! It’s located on the river in Woodbridge, near Guildford. This is a fully fenced park with safety latch gates at the main entrance. Although it’s not that close to us I’ve found it worth the drive as Miss 3 and friends have loved it each time we’ve been. There are so many play areas to explore, sand, nature and water play, slides, flying fox, tunnels, swings and a large expanse of green grass. Have you heard of the OneOneFive Hamilton Hill development? It’s located on the former site of Hamilton Hill High School and it’s got some amazing play spaces. They’ve combined nature, water, accessibility, and paths through native bushes to create a fun and beautiful environment for everyone to enjoy. The Dick Lawrence Oval Playground in Beaconsfield has undergone a massive upgrade. The centrepiece is a 3-level treehouse with a twisty slide and a smaller dual flat slide. To encourage all-inclusive access there are multiple entry points into the cubby – ramp, through the floor ladder, a timber climbing wall and a rock-climbing wall. Claughton Reserve, Bayswater Claughton Reserve, Bayswater, is a picturesque park located by the Swan River. This play space features a nature play area that kids of all ages will love. In addition, there is a colourful fairy trail to be explored. The new playground area at Claughton Reserve was completed in December 2020, and designed to provide a sense of adventure and challenge for children aged 2-12.
