Scitech in Perth has always been a top destination for families seeking an interactive and educational experience, but their latest feature exhibition, Destination Mars, takes things to the next level! Running since October 2024, this hands-on exhibit invites visitors to imagine life on the Red Planet, with a variety of exciting activities that both kids and adults can enjoy.
Our family—toddler, baby, and all—had an amazing time exploring Destination Mars, which is packed with engaging activities designed to challenge visitors to explore, adapt, and survive in a completely different environment. One of the standout experiences was feeling G-force in a spinning capsule, which gave us a real sense of space travel’s physical demands.
Our toddler especially loved shooting parachutes and driving the Surface Exploration Vehicle (SEV) across a Mars-like landscape.
Older kids and adults will enjoy landing a probe, examining rocks under a microscope, and even growing plants in space—all cleverly designed to teach STEM concepts in a fun and immersive way.
The exhibit also offers great photo opportunities, making it easy to capture some out-of-this-world memories!
Parents will be pleased to know that pram parking is available, and the space is well laid out, allowing little ones to explore safely. While mornings can be quite busy, the afternoons are generally quieter. If you’re driving in, Scitech offers a convenient $5 for 5 hours parking deal—just make sure to use the parking pay machine inside Scitech to access the discount.
Of course, a visit to Scitech wouldn’t be complete without a snack break! Just outside the entrance, Splitting Beans Café is a great spot to refuel. Their toasted chicken wrap is a solid choice, but the real star is their banana bread—a must-try that has become a staple for us whenever we visit. With friendly staff and fresh food, it’s a fantastic way to break up the day before heading back for more science fun.
Beyond Destination Mars, the rest of Scitech remains a must-visit, but it’s worth noting that this exhibit is unique because it’s always changing, unlike the fixed displays. If your family loves interactive learning, consider getting an annual membership, which offers unlimited entry, discounts on workshops and events, and even free entry to partner science centres across Australia and worldwide—a great deal starting at just $42.
Whether you’re a space enthusiast or just looking for a fun and educational outing for the kids, Destination Mars at Scitech is a must-visit! It’s an experience that brings science to life in an engaging and hands-on way, making it the perfect family day out.
