Hidden behind the Wokalup Tavern, you may not notice the Brugan Brewery, while on a road trip down South Western Highway. Just after the town of Harvey (and the yummy Harvey Cheese outlet!) Brugan Brewery offers family-friendly dining. While we dined without kids on our visit, the venue’s big beer garden makes it a good option for families travelling in the area and wanting to stop for lunch.
Brugan is boutique craft brewery who describe themselves as having a paddock-to-plate food philosophy. I had high hopes for their seasonal menu, which was let down by one dish, but more on that in a sec.
What makes Brugan particularly appealing for families is the outdoor space. The brewery features a rolling lawn area with children’s sandpit, allowing kids to play while adults keep an eye on them while dining. There’s a boat, mud kitchen, stepping logs and toys. The sand pit is not shaded, so be sure to get little ones to slip, slop, slap.
There’s also a few garden games found around the alfresco dining space; connect 4, and my fave corn holes.
On the menu there’s pub favourites, pizzas and share plates. We shared tasty chilli caramel pork belly bites and smoked kangaroo, while Mr H also had a bowl of chips.
Marked as “Gluten free” on the menu, the smoked kangaroo (served cold) with fried potato, and a plum, apple & bush berry compote was topped with a suspiciously non-GF wattle seed lavosh. After tucking into a few potatoes, it occurred to me about the lavosh probably not being GF and after I queried it, the lavosh turned not to be gluten free. Staff were apologetic, but I would have preferred them to have been on the ball more about the GF situation and offered me a refund for the unfinished meal.
Kids have a few options on the dedicated children’s menu.
Dog owners will be happy to hear that Brugan is pet-friendly, making it good for families who travel with their four-legged members. There’s plenty of parking too.
The venue’s spacious layout, and lively atmosphere make it clear why so many families gravitate here.
