Located just a little over an hour out of Perth, you’ll find Hoddywell Archery is set up on a lovely large property with lots of shade. Hoddywell is Australia’s only public Archery Park, which has 3 archery trails, target lane, caravan park & camping grounds.
Hoddywell Archery Park caters for individuals, families and social groups who want to “have a go” at archery without the expense of purchasing archery equipment or joining an archery club. Public Hire is only open on Saturday & Sunday, 9.30am – 5pm and during School Holidays. (Always closed Thursday & Friday)
There are 3 shooting trails which cater for beginners, intermediate and advanced levels of experience and a Target Lane that has a shooting range from 10m to 90m. The beginner trail is very well suited for families including children as young as 5 years old. The trail itself is gentle with no steep climbs.
Once the staff paired the kids up with bows and arrows to suit their age and size it was off down to the archery trail for the safety rules and a lesson.
Before starting off on the trail we headed down to the practise target area where our instructor Ernie ran through the correct way to hold the bow and load the arrow. He educated us on correct stance and how to aim. The instructions were very clear and the kids all picked it up quite quickly.
Once we practised our shots we were able to move on to Target 1 on the 9 Target Trial which is for beginners.
The targets are enclosed which makes it much easier to find the stray arrows!! Although a few were shot over the top, there wasn’t a lot of searching in the bushes needed.
The trail is easy to follow and well laid out, it is one way so there is no backtracking for safety reasons. There is plenty shade available at each target while you wait for your turn. A family of four can easily complete the trail in around 1 ½ hrs. The targets are set up with a choice of distances so you can challenge yourself. My kids got quite competitive with each other and made up their own challenges at each target … the first in the blue; 2 arrows in the red; all arrows on the board were some of them.
The bragging rights went to Miss 11 who was the closest to the middle bullseye. Once you have finished all 9 targets, it’s back up to the office to return your equipment.
Hoddywell Archery has a lovely seating area, snacks and drinks are available to purchase and you can also bring along your own lunch.
We had a fantastic day out, lots of fun and I am sure we’ll be returning during the school holidays.
