Looking for an interesting way to introduce kids to Perth’s history? Hidden away in Stirling Gardens in the city, the Old Court House Law Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into WA’s early colonial days.
Built in 1836, did you know the Old Court House is recognised as Perth’s oldest building? Originally built as the legal hub of the Swan River Colony, it also played an important role in Perth’s early development. Today, this historic building has been transformed into a museum where visitors can explore WA’s history of law and justice.
One highlight of our visit was stepping inside the historic courtroom. It was interesting to see where court proceedings once took place and imagine what life was like during Perth’s early colonial days. The courtroom itself offers a glimpse into the past, making history feel more tangible for curious visitors.
Throughout the museum, you will find an interesting collection of historical artefacts, photographs, documents and displays that tell the stories about the development of WA’s legal system. You’ll also find plenty of interesting reads along the way, offering insights into the people, events, and legal milestones that have shaped our state.

The museum also provides an opportunity to reflect on the impact of British colonisation- particularly on Aboriginal people and their established system of law and justice. These stories offer an important perspective on WA’s shared history and provide opportunities for meaningful conversation with older children.

My younger girl particularly enjoyed the chance to dress up in legal costumes and take on the roles of judges and lawyers. It was a fun hands-on activity that brought a little play into the learning experience!

We also found the museum staff friendly and welcoming, happy to help and share information during our visit. The Main Courtroom is accessible to everyone; however, there are four steps leading up to the other three museum galleries- a virtual tour of the galleries is available instead. There are no toilets inside the museum; the nearest are at the Supreme Court Gardens. Only one ACROD parking bay is located right outside the museum, with the nearest public parking at the Council House.
While it is a relatively small museum, there is still plenty to discover for families interested in history and learning about WA’s past. It also provides an opportunity to introduce older children to the history of law and justice in WA, which they have learnt in school.
Best of all, entry is free, with donations appreciated, making it an easy addition to a day exploring Perth City. After your visit, take a stroll through the surrounding Supreme Court Gardens or continue exploring the nearby historic buildings and attractions on a walking trail.
