If you’re on the hunt for a family-friendly pub that ticks all the boxes, why not book a table at the Boab Tavern in High Wycombe. This popular local is just a five-minute drive from Perth Airport, making it a super convenient pit stop for families coming or going – or just looking for a relaxed meal out.
We dined for lunch, on a chilly winters weekend and found that it was fully booked.
The Boab’s family-friendly atmosphere is a real drawcard for group gatherings, as there is a playground in view of one half of the bistro dining area. There’s a welcoming, casual vibe and the staff are friendly. It’s not a quiet spot for a meal, but that will suit a lot of parents, who worry about their kids not wanting to sit at the table when they go out.
The bistro is spacious, so there’s plenty of room for prams and highchairs. The menu has lots of choice, as well as catering for gluten free and vegetarian diets. For the adults, we indulged in a pork belly dish, with crisp crackle, roast potatoes and broccolini.
And beef-cheeks were melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Mr H enjoyed this and wished it was a bigger portion.
What really sets The Boab apart form a lot of pubs is how much they cater for families. Their kids’ menu is bigger than most, with all the usual favourites (think nuggets, fish, burgers and more), plus a few dishes not often seen on kids’ menu.
Master 11 was stoked to try a chicken parmigiana for the first time and he loved it – especially the very melty cheese on top.
The girls ordered a classic hot dog and chips, and fish and chips.
Plus, there’s a little something extra – every kid’s meal comes with a tub of vanilla ice cream.
The undercover soft fall playground is fully enclosed, so you can actually relax and enjoy your meal while the kids burn off some energy. It’s a traditional fort-style playground, with imaginative play (like a shop front), climbing elements and a few slides too. It’s best for toddlers up to age 7 or 8.
Around the walls are lots of fun activity-based games, jigsaws, connect 4, “pinball” and more. The frog jigsaw kept Miss 8 occupied for ages, but she gave up after about 15 mins of trying to complete the frog!
Technically, the playground is outside, but in winter they pop the roller shutters down to keep the rain out. It was a little chilly in there, so you might want to keep that in mid and bring along a jumper for the kids.
If you visit on a Sunday afternoon, kiddos are in for an extra treat. The Boab puts on free kids’ entertainment, with face painting.
Plus, colouring-in sheets.
So next time you’re in the area, or need somewhere central to meet up with family and friends, give the Boab Tavern a try. With its big kids’ menu, playground, and friendly service, it’s a spot that’s a hit for families that like to keep things casual.
