If you’re after something these school holidays that’s fun, imaginative, and just the right amount of cheeky, this is your sign to climb the stalk and catch the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s Beanstalk at the Ellie Eaton Theatre at Claremont Showground, it is nothing short of brilliant!
A giant-sized adventure with a clever twist, Beanstalk had my kids completely captivated from the first scene. Their eyes lit up, the giggles were non-stop, and the energy in the room was contagious. What I especially loved as a parent was the clever layer of adult humour woven throughout – subtle enough for the kids to miss, but sharp enough to give us grown-ups a laugh. That kind of multi-layered storytelling is what makes a children’s show genuinely enjoyable for the whole family.
And the post-show Q&A? Brilliant. The performer took time to answer all sorts of curious questions from the kids – from how the theatrics worked to why the characters made certain choices. It sparked some great conversations afterward and made the kids feel seen and heard.
We also arrived early to explore the Creative Learning Centre, which opens 45 minutes before and stays open 30 minutes after the show. t was the perfect warm-up before the show and a fun way to wind down afterward and the kids had a great time.
