Pedal Play at Whiteman Park is a brilliant way for families to explore this huge bushland park without little legs getting tired. Tucked in the Village Mall, Pedal Play offers a fleet of pedal-powered go-karts so you can cruise the paths, picnic areas and bushland at your own pace. It’s one of those activities that’s just as much fun for the grown-ups as it is for the kids, and a great way to see more of the park than you ever could on foot.
There is a go-kart to suit almost every age and stage. Younger riders from around four years old can hop into a junior single kart, while older kids, teens and adults can step up to larger single or two-seater karts, including options with single or dual pedals so everyone can help with the “driving”.
For families or groups, the BERG Gran Tour four-seater is a standout – you can all sit together, chat and enjoy the ride, rather than trying to keep track of a trail of kids disappearing down the path.
Once you’re strapped in and pedalling, the real fun begins. From the Village you can follow the shared-use paths around Mussel Pool, head towards the Children’s Forest, cross little bridges and weave through shady bushland. There are around 14 kilometres of paths to explore, so you can turn it into a proper adventure, stopping at lookouts and Playgrounds along the way. Many families make a day of it by packing a picnic; with some karts able to tow a small trailer, it’s easy to bring along an esky or extra gear without having to lug it all by hand.
The karts are surprisingly sturdy and designed to handle park terrain, making it easy to pedal over gentle bumps and up small inclines. It’s a decent workout for adults, but in a fun way – you’re too busy laughing with the kids to notice you’re exercising. Helmets are available from the Pedal Play shop, and the friendly staff are great at helping you choose a suitable kart and getting everyone fitted and comfortable before you set off. If you’re visiting with extended family or a group of friends, hiring a few karts and taking turns is an easy way to keep the kids entertained between picnics, Playgrounds and train or tram rides.
Pricing is straightforward and good value for the amount of time you can spend exploring. Hire rates currently start from around $15 per hour for junior karts and go up to about $65 per hour for the four-seater family kart with electric assist. Half-day and full-day hire options are also available if you want the freedom to come and go from the karts across your visit. It’s worth checking at the counter or online for the latest prices and kart options, especially during busier periods.
Pedal Play operates weather permitting, and may close on very hot days (36 degrees and above) or during very wet weather, so it’s wise to confirm conditions and opening times before you head out. When the sun is shining and the paths are dry, though, it’s hard to beat as a relaxed, low-tech family adventure.
