The Museum of Natural History in Guildford offers a truly unique and fascinating experience for families looking to explore Australia’s diverse wildlife in an unconventional setting. Housed in the heritage-listed former Regent Theatre, this world-class display features hundreds of Australia’s native animals, birds, fish, and reptiles, all expertly preserved by Master Taxidermist Michael Buzza.
What to Expect
As you enter through deep red curtains, you’ll be immersed in an extraordinary collection of over 2,000 preserved specimens. The museum creates the feel of the Australian bush as you wander amongst kangaroos, emus, sharks, and snakes. Many exhibits are stuffed and mounted, while others have been reproduced in longer-lasting fiberglass.
The impressive collection includes everything from delicate bat skeletons and tiny birds to massive life-sized reproductions of elephants, rhinos, buffalo, and even a beautiful Sumatran tiger.
Dinosaur enthusiasts will be thrilled by the life-size models throughout the museum, including a pteranodon suspended from the ceiling and a tyrannosaurus at the rear of the building.
Glass cases display preserved insects, fossils, and even an insect preserved in amber (reminiscent of Jurassic Park!).
Good to Know
The museum is particularly suitable for preschoolers and older children, as younger ones may struggle with the “no touching” policy. Parents should note that more sensitive children might be upset by the preserved animals, so consider how your child might react before visiting.
The Museum of Natural History is pram and wheelchair friendly with council-approved disability facilities, making it accessible for all families. It’s conveniently located just a five-minute walk from Guildford train station, opposite the station and near Alfred’s Kitchen.
