Choo-choo โ there’s a new sushi train in town! Opened in June 2024, Sushi Jiro is found at Westfield Carousel. On entering, you’ll be welcomed with a loud โIrasshaimaseโ, a traditional Japanese welcome, from the staff. Thereโs plenty of booth seating for four in the bustling restaurant. There’s no table service as such, but you can order straight from the tablet.
Dining at a sushi train is easy – simply grab dishes from the train and start eating. Each plate is colour coded which relates to the price of the dish.
The kiddos are sure to be impressed by an actual train, which brings orders made from the tablet, straight to your table. There’s plenty of plates of sushi going around, and around on the sushi train, with a wide range of chicken, seafood and vegetarian rolls to pick.
A range of cooked dishes and soups are available to order via the tablet, as well as Sushi Jiro’s modern-Japanese sushi tacos.
The big hits on our table were the crispy chicken, tacos as well as the chicken and avo rolls. For me, edamame beans are always a go-to healthy snack.
If you’re gluten intolerant, like me, you may have a difficult time trying to figure out what you’d like to eat from the menu, as dishes are not marked GF and staff did not seem very informed. I ate the “safe” options edamame, avocado sushi and salmon sashimi. Highchairs are available for little ones and if the food proves too different for your kids, a plan B of chicken nuggets is available.
My teenager really enjoyed the novelty of a sushi train, and to try the Japanese dessert “mochi”, a sort of filled rice dough ball. He loved the tiramisu flavour.
At the end of your meal, a member of the team will come along and count your plates and present you with the bill.
Sushi Jiro is open for dine-in. There is also a takeaway outlet in the mall, for sushi on the go.
Find at Sushi Jiro on the outside of Westfield Carousel, opposite McDonalds, Albany Highway, Cannington.
