Do you have young girls who have brilliant business ideas and don’t know where to start? As a mum of 2 growing girls, I recently learnt about Self Made Girls & Self Made Squad and their mission to empower young and neurodivergent girls (aged 8-17) to unlock their potential and pursue their aspirations, regardless of how big or small. Whether it’s starting her first lemonade stand, cupcake business or creating crafty works- it’s allowing a safe space for them to showcase their ideas and have faith in their capabilities.
At Self Made Girls, it’s all about inspiring young entrepreneurs and creating future leaders. Young girls can build up their confidence and essential life skills through entrepreneurship. With tools and resources available, girls can use them to bring their ideas to life and pursue their dreams with assurance and determination with community support.
My girls recently joined them for one of their Kid’s Pop Up Market Days, and it was one of their best days in life! They love making crafts, so this was a good opportunity for them to turn their hobby into something bigger!
Upon registering for Market Day, we received a guide that included a lot of reading for the girls about starting their business idea. There were very clear suggestions and instructions about what they needed to do about getting inventory, advertising to reach out to their family and friends before market day, making sure their products and services are up to a good standard and setting up their stall. They also have access to their free resources online for a limited time about financial planning, confidence and growing a business.
The girls had sufficient time to prepare for their business. They used their creative skills to come up with their business name and logo and spent many hours creating their crafty works.
On Market Day, the girls arrived early to set up before the opening time. The venue was nicely set up, and their stall came with a trestle table and chairs.
My girls truly enjoyed their time there. They get to meet and greet their customers, pitch their sales, and finally deliver their handcrafted products to their customers.
They learnt about basic bookkeeping and handling money transactions. Their beaming joy, whenever their customers praised them for their work and liked their products, would make any parents proud.
I loved that, as it was a kid’s pop-up market, the community came and supported these lovely kids. It was a fantastic event to meet other kids and see their brilliant work.
The staff members were all very lovely, ensuring that the day was running well. They checked on the girls regularly- chatting with them and encouraging them throughout the day.
Overall, it was an excellent experience for the girls and helped them kickstart their dream! The girls are excited for more market days (you can find their upcoming market days here)!
Beyond their regular Market Days, Self Made Girls also hosts special Market Days specifically designed for Neurodivergent Kidpreneurs – creating an inclusive space where young entrepreneurs with ASD, ADD, ADHD, SPD and other neurodivergent conditions (whether self-identified or diagnosed) can shine. These thoughtfully curated events invite families to explore a wonderful variety of unique and handmade items created by these talented young minds, celebrating their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit in a supportive, understanding environment. It’s a beautiful opportunity to witness the incredible innovation that comes from thinking differently, while supporting these amazing kids as they build confidence and showcase their remarkable talents to the community.
Besides Market Day, Self Made Girls runs programs like the school holiday entrepreneur program and business-related workshops. See all the details on their Facebook page.
