We recently visited the redeveloped Mundaring Community Sculpture Park.  It is located on Jacoby Street across the road from The Mundaring Hotel (not to be confused with the Mundaring Weir Hotel) There is more than enough parking along the road as it seemed everyone was there to take advantage of the good weather after the rain. If you are looking for a gorgeous spot for a picnic then make sure you check out the picnic area at Noble Falls. It has everything you need for the perfect family day out! Noble Falls is located just past the town of Gidgegannup, 50 kilometres northeast of Perth CBD. The picnic area is positioned across the road from the Noble Falls Tavern. Watermans Bay Playground is a hidden treasure, set back off the main West Coast Drive over-looking the sea.  You can easily miss the turning as it’s such a small off-road down to a car park for approximately 30 cars. You’ll first come to the BBQs and picnic table and carry on and you’ll see the walk-way to the small bit of beach and rocks.  Next you’ll see the full fenced playground and a large area of grass suitable for ball games. Mariala Vista Park is located in Jindowie, Yanchep. So many of the new parks that have been built recently have a problem with serious lack of shade, where the developer has planted trees but they won’t provide any shade until they mature in years to come. Today we discovered the newly opened pirate playground in Ellenbrook.  It’s located on Verbana Drive near Cashman Avenue.  It is fully fenced (although there are a few areas where little ones could escape in the space under the fencing), shaded and there is soft fall and well as sand within in the park. My 3 year old was in pirate heaven as the main part of the playground is shaped as a pirate ship with a steering wheel, pretend canons and a lookout. There is a way to feel like you’ve planned a quality family outing, without driving two hours to get there.  Churchman Brook Dam is located in the Perth hills just a short drive from Armadale. Built in the 1920’s this is one of Perth’s main water catchments that supply our drinking water. Grenville Reserve is a hidden gem of a park located in the heart of Tuart Hill. It is located on the corner of Stoneham and Hector Streets, behind Tuart College. This park features a playground that would suit children of various ages and skill levels. It has a toddler swing and a regular swing, two slides, a small flying fox, a 4-way rocker, and a handful of climbing and balancing challenges. Most of the playground is covered by shade sails. Spring is the perfect time to visit Lesmurdie Falls, found on the escarpment of the Perth Hills in Mundy Regional Park. And you don’t need to travel very far. Lesmurdie Falls is just a 30 minute drive east from Perth CBD. If we’ve had decent rainfall over winter, then the falls will be flowing and there are also a host of wildflowers on display too. We even spotted a bright blue fairy wren, though I wasn’t quick enough to take a picture! Seldon Street Playground is located in a small park on Eton Street, North Perth. The street is fairly quiet, with plenty of roadside parking available. The playground area is fenced with two Maglock gates, and the equipment is surrounded by rubbery softfall. Shade sails cover most of the playground, with shady trees outside the fence helping to increase the shaded area. The main play structure features a tall twisty slide, ladders and a bridge to climb, as well as a rope web and two different sized climbing walls. Hilton Park is tucked away in the middle of Duncraig. You can access it from the end of 6 cul-de-sacs, one being Hilton Place. This is great as there are no busy roads running alongside it though it means there isn’t a lot of parking available. Hilton Park is a large park with plenty of tall trees offering shade. In the heart of Lesmurdie is Bill Shaw Reserve. The suburban park in the Perth Hills is like many other Perth parks with the playground made up of a sand fall area with a large playframe that features a slide, climbing nets, climbing wall and more. There are also a couple of swings, one being for babies/toddlers. This play area is covered by shade sails in warmer months. Next to the playground, there is a covered picnic table and BBQ. Manning Park in Spearwood is the perfect spot to take the kids out for a picnic and play in the park. The reserve is huge with four car parks in total and plenty of wide open grassed areas. The playground itself is quite amazing, plenty for all ages, stages and abilities. There are shade sails over each section and plenty of trees to pull up under too. The Rannoch Tay Reserve in Hamersley offers a number of different experiences for Perth families. There are four different areas of the reserve, comprising of a nature play area, two BBQ areas with a more traditional playground and swing set, and open spaces. Burswood Park is located on the river near the Crown Hotel complex. You access it from Glenn Place and there is parking provided. If the small parking area near the park is full, there is other parking available within easy walking distance. It is a lovely park with manicured gardens, lots of open space and great views. The playground is fully fenced and has good shade cover from the beautiful old tree in the middle of the playground and the surrounding trees. Clarko Reserve is a coastal reserve located at Trigg Beach at the end of Karrinyup Road. The jewel colours of the verdant green grass and shimmering blue sea beyond the dunes is a feast for the eyes. At a sheltered end of the reserve, near the beach car park, is a good sized playground with equipment to suit a range of children. I feel toddlers through to six year olds would probably enjoy this one most. The Caterpillar Playground is a favourite amongst families in Mandurah. Parents love it due to the fact it is enclosed and kids love it because there is so much to do. Also known as Milgar Street Reserve, the Caterpillar Playground is easily accessible via Park  Road with plenty of parking available. Access is also available via Reserve Drive for those on foot. Be wary on weekends though, it is situated next door to the BMX track so can be a little hard to find parking. Frederick Stubbs Park is a small park right on the coast in Quinns Rocks. It offers a small grassed area and a playground set on sand. The playground has a limestone retaining wall/steps, which along with the hill, would slow down any dashes towards the road which is nearby. Fitting in with its location, the play equipment is shaped like a boat and has a steering wheel and compass to help navigate the way! JH Abrahams Reserve is a great park and playground located on the Swan River in Crawley. There is a shaded playground area, plenty of grass space for running and ball games, picnic tables, BBQs, drinking fountains, toilets and great views. There is a bike/walk path along the river if you want to include a walk or ride. The river is below the river wall and quite a distance from the playground. Broadview park is set around a small lake, with a path running all the way around it. It’s a lovely spot and perfect for a stroll or ride around the lake and a play. Over the water is a gorgeous little gazebo with seats inside. This is the perfect spot to look for ducks and koi. The gazebo is safely fenced, with no risk of children slipping into the water. Nestled in a leafy corner by Lake Claremont is a lovely naturally shaded playground. Lake Claremont Playground is a good mix of nature play and traditional playground equipment. The playground base is sand surrounded by grass and wood chips. There are no shade sails, but most of the equipment is naturally shaded by the large surrounding trees. There are stepping stones, logs and ropes to climb on, some with wooden platforms or balancing logs connecting different parts of the playground. Des Penman Reserve is a large grassy reserve located in Nollamara. It is one of the largest of its kind in the area. Set aside in one corner, there is a neat playground, which is staggered over a number of levels for the kids to explore. The main climbing frame has two plastic slides, a straight one and a twisty corkscrew slide. There are various climbing ladders, an abacus with blue plastic balls, a steering wheel for imaginative play, and a flying fox. Huntington Park is a lovely small park, with most of the space dedicated to various wonderful play structures which are all set on sand. The biggest draw for slightly older children would be the giant flying fox swings. There are two running parallel to each other, great for racing your friends! You pull the swing up onto a platform and go flying across the length of the park, all whilst seated on, and holding on tightly to the swing. Robert Thompson Reserve is a large grassy park located opposite the Noranda Village Shopping Centre. In the centre of this lovely park is a playground with equipment to suit most children. The ground surrounding the play equipment is a mix of sand and rubbery soft-fall. There are shade sails up in the warmer months, and there are a few small trees shading parts of the playground. Located in a scenic spot overlooking the river in Dalkeith is the Sunset Heritage Precinct. Just off of Beach Road in Girrawheen, we discovered Tendring Park, a neat little park with a life sized snakes and ladders game. The main play structure in the playground features a twisty slide, a climbing wall, a rope climbing web, a fireman pole, some balancing platforms, monkey bars, and a little steering wheel at the top for imagination play. Beecroft Park is found opposite Empire Village Shopping Centre in City Beach and is popular with local families. The playground is sand fall based and naturally shaded by mature trees, as well as shade sails. The sand is littered with a lot of leaf and sticks, so little ones may prefer to keep their shoes on. Just 5 minutes drive from Garden City Shopping Centre, atop Wireless Hill, is a beautiful is Wireless Hill Nature Playspace. We arrived in the middle of the day, and amazingly the play area is naturally shaded by the surrounding trees, even at noon. It was so quiet and peaceful, with by birdsong come from the surrounding bush land. Miss almost 3 really enjoyed Wireless Hill Nature Playspace . Stretton Way Reserve, situated behind Kenwick Village and is one of the shadiest parks I have seen. Shade sails cover the climbing equipment as well as the BBQ area making it good for summer outings. The play equipment has an excellent variety of play equipment including three slides, monkey bars, balancing equipment, various levels of climbing structures, and a basketball hoop. The BBQ area has picnic tables and seats to go with the two free BBQs. It is very well shaded and sits alongside a grassed area perfect for kicking a ball or playing cricket. The Village at Wellard Playground offers something for all ages! There is 7m rope climbing frame they can come down the slide at the middle or keep climbing to the 2 stories above. In front of the climbing slide there is a jumble of jungle ropes including a couple of hammocks to get a quick rest in before more energy burning. The Village West Playground at Whiteman Park has undergone a complete reconstruction with all new play equipment and shade sails. It’s a perfect park for summer days with almost the entire park covered by shade.  It is still fully fenced with only one open entrance near the picnic tables. There are three main play equipment areas surrounded by a soft fall walkway which is painted with train tracks and great for little ones pretending to be a train. Next door to the new Wembley Sports Pavilion, there is a brand new playground, just opened as of 18th January 2017. We were lucky to be some of the first people to put it to the test. Wembley Sports Pavilion Playground combines a great mix of nature play and traditional play equipment. As we walked across from the carpark, the first thing we came to was some climbing logs and rubbery humps surrounded by wood chips and garden. Hyde Park water playground is a fantastic spot to go and cool off in those warmer months. The water park has recently undergone an upgrade and now has new shade sails installed over the entire splash pad area. There is plenty of shade around the park also due to the large trees that are scattered all around. We visited Christmas eve and were expecting it to be really busy, but we were quite surprised as we managed to find a lovely spot under a tree (right near the splash pad) and have a picnic lunch. Nestled in the heart of Dianella is the lovely Wake Pola Reserve. This parkland has a good sized playground with shade sails and natural shading. The playground features a large play structure with two slides, a noughts and crosses game, shop front, fireman pole and flying fox. There are stairs to climb, a tunnel to crawl through and an arched bridge to cross. Separately, there are swings, both toddler and regular, and some spring rockers, including a 4-way see-saw rocker. Located on Pulchella Ramble is a perfect toddler friendly playground. It is fully fenced, which is perfect to stop the little ones escaping. There is a variety of play equipment for the little ones to crawl/walk over, rock on, slide down, swing on etc. As a mum of a 10 month old, my highlight was the bucket swing! In amongst all the shiny office buildings in West Perth is Totterdell Park. The leafy inner city park is made up of a  soft fall play area with a large metal  play frame that features two slides, “shop” window, climbing  nets, ramps, monkey bars, a  climbing wall and more.  There is also a see-saw and fun nest swing too. This play area isn’t covered by shade sails, though the park is surrounded by mature trees, giving a little afternoon shade.   The quiet  park is not fenced and runs alongside Thomas Street, so you’ll want to keep an eye on little escape artists if you choose to take younger children.  There is ample space Read more…
