Imagine dining under a cherry blossom tree in the Yamanashi Prefecture and having a view of Mount Fuji and Chureito Pagoda right in front of you, well, that’s really how it feels like at Mame Japanese Restaurant!
This newly-opened Japanese restaurant in Mount Lawley is serving up one of Perth’s best authentic traditional Japanese food, with its unique touch and warm décor that really set this place apart. Definitely worth a visit if you are looking for a memorable meal with the family, and the venue is dog-friendly too!
As the restaurant name suggests (Mame translates to beans in Japanese), we have to try out the Homemade ‘Yose’ Tofu. Using a 100-year-old recipe that’s passed down three generations from Owner Airi’s family tofu shop in Higashi-Ojima in downtown Tokyo, the tofu is made in front of us. It’s the only place in Perth that does this, so all tofu-lovers, be sure to get this as they only have limited servings each day.
Other unique dishes include the Obanzai (traditional home-style side dishes) cooked using Airi’s grandma’s special recipe. The Obanzai is prepared differently daily, featuring seasonal vegetables, fish and pickled dishes. You can find vegan and gluten-free options on their menu too.
Another speciality is their handcrafted Onigiri (rice ball), which is made fresh to order with eight different flavours. We tried the classic Yuki Shio Salt, Temmusu (shrimp tempura) and Tuna Mayo, which were all generously portioned.
The Gyukatsu (breaded rare beef steak) has to be their most popular dish! The steak was succulent, and you can cook it as per their instruction on the hot stone.
Children will enjoy the Kids Sushi Train (arrives fully rotating!!) priced at $15, which has two rice balls, chicken karaage, prawn tempura, side dishes and a surprise egg! Inside the surprise egg is a token that they can use at their Gachapon (toy capsule) machine when they finish their meal. The portion size is on the smaller side, which is perfect for small-eaters and the under-8s. Older children will enjoy the Onigiri more, or just sharing a main.
Sake lovers will enjoy the huge variety of sakes on the menu, and there are plenty of other drinks (freshly made soybean drinks included!) options too.
The restaurant is spacious with indoor and outdoor seating (where the cherry blossom tree is). Baby chairs are available and toilets are located inside the shop. You can find free parking right outside the shop or just along the streets. It’s best to call them to book a reservation as this place gets packed during busy hours.
