If youโ€™re looking for something completely different to do with the kids โ€“ something immersive, educational, weather-proof and genuinely memorable โ€“ Hologram Zoo Family Entertainment Centre in Kelmscott delivers a family day out unlike anything else in Perth. There are no cages, no real animals and no headsets; instead, this is where imagination meets technology, bringing animals and entire worlds to life through holograms.

The signature Hologram Zoo experience uses cutting-edge holographic laser light technology to create breathtaking 3D animals and environments. Families of all ages can walk through tunnels, rooms and sky-scapes where holographic lions, dinosaurs, penguins or even reindeer seem to move and interact all around you. It feels surprisingly real, and because youโ€™re moving through the space together, itโ€™s a shared adventure rather than something you simply sit and watch.

Hologram Zoo is completely indoors and air-conditioned, making it a brilliant option year-round, especially on hot or rainy days. The visit begins with a short introductory presentation in the Hologram Theatre, where you learn what to expect and pick up your lightweight hologram glasses (available in both adult and child sizes, and they fit comfortably over prescription glasses).

Once inside, the Hologram Zoo feels like a traditional zoo reimagined through light. Families move through a 20-metre hologram tunnel, several immersive rooms where scenes appear with real depth, a sky tunnel where the action unfolds overhead, and fenced hologram zones where animals and environments arise from the floor.

Motionโ€‘tracking technology shifts the hologramsโ€™ perspective as you move, helping them appear as if they occupy real space around you. Unlike a cinema, this is not flat 3D, and unlike virtual reality, there are no headsets. Everyone sees the same world from their own viewpoint, which keeps it more inclusive and reduces the likelihood of motion sickness compared to VR. Children instinctively reach out, duck, point and gasp โ€“ itโ€™s incredibly engaging, and the sterilised glasses are cleaned after every use for peace of mind.

Hologram Zoo is designed for all ages, from curious preschoolers to teens and even grandparents. There is no violence or harm towards animals depicted, but the realism of some scenes can be strong, and there are a few mild jump-scare moments that some children may find thrilling and others a little startling. Staff are excellent at helping you choose the most suitable Hologram Zoo experience for your family, especially if you have very young or more sensitive children. Sensory-wise, there is no strobe lighting, but there are some brightness changes and flashing lights, and the glasses use mild activeโ€‘shutter technology, so itโ€™s worth keeping this in mind if anyone in your group has sensory sensitivities.

When booking, families choose which Hologram Zoo experience they would like to see, with shows rotating seasonally throughout the year. Many feature wildlife, while others transport you to completely different worlds, such as prehistoric dinosaur landscapes, outer space or a festive winter wonderland during the Christmas Hologram Zoo. Experiences can include African animals like lions, giraffes, elephants and hyenas; Australian icons such as kangaroos, koalas, parrots, dolphins and crocodiles; Asian favourites including tigers, pandas, monkeys and peacocks; icy Arctic scenes with polar bears, penguins, narwhals and glowing auroras; as well as themed dinosaur and Christmas shows. Staff are happy to recommend which option best suits your family, particularly if youโ€™re visiting with younger children.

We chose the Africa Hologram Zoo experience and my animalโ€‘loving child was completely absorbed โ€“ from giraffes towering overhead to hyenas circling above us. A few moments felt startling simply because they were so lifelike, but nothing was aggressive or inappropriate, and the ability to pull the glasses down or move through a section more quickly was enough to keep everyone comfortable.

Your ticket also includes a visit to the Green Screen Photo & Video Studio, where you can snap fun digital photos and videos to download later via QR code, and every guest receives a free take-home Projectogram โ€“ a cardboard hologram gift that extends the magic at home. The main experience runs for around 45 minutes, with a few extra minutes in the photo studio.

There are also optional add-on attractions for those who want to extend the fun. The Flying Theatre is a separate experience that can be booked on its own or as part of a combo ticket. In this suspended dome theatre, motion-enabled seats, wind, mist, fragrance and a huge dome screen combine to make you feel like youโ€™re really flying over snowy mountains, deep canyons, oceans and famous landmarks.

On our visit we chose the Dinosaur Flying Theatre, gliding through the skies, diving underwater and swooping past Tโ€‘Rexes โ€“ it felt impressively real. All riders are secured with seatbelts, and if anyone feels overwhelmed, raising a hand lets staff quickly pause or stop the ride, which is very reassuring for parents. Those prone to motion sickness may want to consider this before riding. This is currently the first dome flying theatre of its kind in Australia, adding an extra โ€œwowโ€ factor.

Thrillโ€‘seekers and older kids might gravitate towards the VR Dragon Rider, another optional experience. This five-seat VR ride lets you control movement and direction in the virtual world, complete with wind, heat, vibration and sound effects that enhance the sense of speed and height. There is a minimum height requirement of 120 cm, so itโ€™s best suited to bigger kids, teens and adults. We didnโ€™t try this on our visit as my little one was too young, but it certainly looked like a hit with older families.

From arrival to exit, Hologram Zoo feels thoughtfully set up for families. Thereโ€™s free onsite parking (including ACROD bays), friendly staff, clean accessible toilets and comfortable airโ€‘conditioning. Sessions are capped so it never feels too crowded, and there are seating areas with fun quiz questions to keep kids busy while you wait.

Parents should note that there is no food or drink available onsite, so itโ€™s worth planning snacks or meals around your session.  Hologram Zoo also caters for birthday parties, group bookings, school excursions and holiday programs, offering a unique way to blend fun and learning.

Opening hours vary between school terms and holidays. During school days, Hologram Zoo generally opens Thursday to Sunday, with extended evening sessions on Thursdays and Saturdays. In school holidays, opening hours expand to seven days a week with long daytime and evening trading, making it easy to fit into your schedule whether youโ€™re planning a special outing or a lastโ€‘minute activity.

Hologram Zoo Perth is a oneโ€‘ofโ€‘aโ€‘kind family attraction that combines education, imagination and technology in a way that feels exciting yet accessible. With rotating seasonal experiences, optional addโ€‘on attractions, no real animals in captivity and something to suit a wide range of ages, itโ€™s a fantastic choice for school holidays, weekend adventures or simply trying something new. Itโ€™s not just something you watch โ€“ itโ€™s something you step into together.
