Beth's East Victoria Park

The dream playdate combo is pretty simple, goof coffee, a sweet treat, a big patch of grass and a fun playground for the kiddos. The Ballie Hill Precinct at East Vic Park (home to a pub, pizzeria and more) has a brilliant cafe-bakery, Beth’s.

Beth’s is a charming little spot that’s set inside a beautifully refurbished heritage building. It’s got that lovely “old soul” feel with ornate fireplaces and oodles of history, but with a fresh, modern fit-out that makes it perfect for a quick takeaway or coffee catch-up. Built in 1912, the Rotunda Maternity Hospital founded by Elizabeth Baillie eventually closed in 1998, and was entered onto the heritage register. You can see many fascinating photos and the history of the building around its grand staircase. It’s wonderful to see this grand old dame brought back to life, what an asset for the people that live locally.

The cabinet is stacked with freshly baked goodness. From sweet and savoury pastries, cake slices, and more. You might want to keep in mind that there are no gluten free options.

The vibe is a relaxed local buzz, not loud or chaotic, and it’s perfect if you’re meeting friends with kids and want something easy. Be sure to grab a fresh loaf to take home too.

We enjoyed our coffee and carrot cake on the sunny verandah.

Grab your takeaway from Beth’s and wander straight into the surrounding parklands of Elizabeth Baillie Park. There’s even a handy coffee window if you’ve got a dog in tow.

Beth's East Victoria Park

There are vast lawns that are made for picnic rugs, wobbling toddler walks, kicking a ball, or letting the kids burn energy while the grown-ups finish a hot coffee in peace. Parking was easy, nearby on a weekday morning.

On the far side of the park you’ll find Mildred Creak Playground. It’s a large play space with a mix of equipment for toddlers to tweens.

Closer to Albany Highway, it’s fenced and gated. There’s plenty for kids to explore, making it a solid option for a low-stress park playdate.

There’s a few play elements I’ve never seen before, like this curious looking see saw! So, the kids are sure to enjoy climbing all over that.

There’s a little sand play too. And heaps of climbing frames.

If you’re chasing a fresh “treat and playground” spot for your next meet-up, pop Beth’s and Elizabeth Baillie Park on your list. East Vic Park is looking so family friendly now!
