If youโre looking for an unforgettable experience that blends storytelling, theatre and adventure, Water Dragons at the Joondalup Festival is a must-see. This stunning free event at Hillarys Boat Harbour will transport you and your little explorers into a world of mystery, magic and glowing sea dragon eggs.
What is Water Dragons?
Created by A Blanck Canvas, the masterminds behind breathtaking large-scale puppetry, Water Dragons is an interactive performance where the audience becomes part of the story.
The adventure unfolds as a fishing crew discovers glowing, near-hatching sea dragon eggs and doesnโt know what to do with them. Should they hide them in the sand? Keep them safe? Return them to the sea dragons? Thatโs where the audience steps in.
Families, children and even adults are encouraged to join the adventure, working together to help reunite the eggs with the sea dragons. Watching these enormous, glowing creatures glide through the water under the night sky is nothing short of magical.
Our Experience
From the moment the show started, my toddler was captivated. He eagerly followed the crew, racing across the sand, giggling with excitement, and immersing himself in the adventure. The joy on his face when he helped carry an egg to safety was pricelessโhe cheered, โWe did it!โ and high-fived us in celebration.
For parents, itโs a rare and special experience to see your child so engaged in live theatre, not just watching, but participating in the magic.
Tips for the Best Experience
Want to make the most of your night? Here are a few handy tips:
- Arrive early โ Find a good spot on the sand and soak in the atmosphere.
- Sit at the front โ Bring a picnic rug, but stay back from the shoreline unless you want an emergency rug rescue.
- Dress for adventure โ Barefoot is best, and a towel might come in handy (some little ones couldnโt resist a dip).
- Bring warm layers โ The sea breeze can be chilly after sunset.
- Looking for a quieter experience? Wednesday and Thursday nights are ideal.
- Best spot for sound? The speakers are positioned towards the beach.
- Bonus fun! Free face painting is available from 4 pm to 6 pm each night, so children can transform into little sea creatures before the show.
