If you are looking for a school holiday activity or even an after-school extracurricular program that goes beyond music and crafts, the program at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research offers something genuinely special- an authentic, hands-on introduction to the world of medical science!

Held at the Lotterywest Biodiscovery Centre within the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research in Nedlands, this is a purpose-built, state-of-the-art teaching laboratory operated by Perkins medical researchers and teachers to immerse students in medical science skills through hands-on, real-world learning experiences.

What we love:
Unlike many STEM workshops that taught science from demonstrations, these sessions put children right into the role of a scientist! And because they aren’t in a classroom but in a real lab environment- using the same kind of tools and techniques that scientists use every day, this exposure gives children a much clearer picture of what a career in medical research actually looks like.

Over the course of the 2-hour session (we chose the Microbiology program), children learn to use real laboratory tools- like micropipettes, and get introduced to core microbiology techniques such as “staining” samples.

Children will then use biochemical and deduction skills to explore different microorganisms and identify bacterial cells. This will be their favourite bit as it’s not just watching the experiments- it’s doing them by themselves!

Microbiology might sound intimidating for the children, but the instructors break it down into interesting and age-appropriate terms for them to learn and understand. Do note that most programs are targeted for kids aged 10 and above.

This is by far one of those rare activities that ticks multiple boxes: educational, engaging, different and genuinely enjoyable. My 11-year-old came back inspired to become a scientist and do some groundbreaking research! So, if you have a child who’s always curious about being a scientist and how things work, or if they are not into science yet, this might be just the thing that changes that! Get involved and check out their programs on the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research website so you don’t miss out!
