Swan Active Ballajura is a compact but well-equipped local leisure centre that’s a real hub for the community. Families will find everything they need for a fun and easy swim session, plus the bonus of a modern gym and fitness offering under the same roof. With indoor heated pools, a spa and a café, it’s a handy spot for everything from casual splashing with little ones to keeping older kids active and confident in the water.
The centre’s aquatic area is designed with families in mind. There’s a shallow toddler paddling area (around 0.30m) that’s ideal for babies and young children to sit, splash and build confidence in the water, and a slightly deeper beach-entry leisure pool (up to about 1m) that suits preschoolers and younger primary school kids.
A whirlpool feature in this space adds extra excitement and is a big hit with children who love being swirled around in the moving water.
During our visit, swimming lessons were running in part of the pool, which reduced the public space a little, but the atmosphere stayed relaxed and friendly. Lesson families often finished up with a play in the public area, which added to the fun, busy vibe rather than taking away from it.
For more serious swimmers, there is a heated 25m lap pool, perfect for adults and older kids wanting to do laps or squad training. Aqua fitness, lap swimming and squad programs all run from the centre, and being indoors and heated makes it a reliable option year-round, regardless of the weather. Adults can also take advantage of the on-site spa to relax and unwind after a swim or workout.
Swan Active Ballajura is now very much a “complete fitness experience” rather than just a local pool. Alongside the aquatics, you’ll find a specially built gym fitted out with modern Technogym equipment, as well as a range of group fitness classes. Depending on the current timetable, these can include everything from functional training and strength sessions to gentler options like yoga. That makes it easy for parents to combine their own workout with the kids’ swimming lessons or a family swim.
When hunger hits, the café offers hot and cold food options, including simple hot meals such as fish and chips and toasted sandwiches, plus snacks and drinks. You can sit indoors by the café or head outside to the undercover outdoor area, where there are tables and a relaxed, casual feel. Families who prefer to self-cater can make use of the on-site BBQs, which are perfect for a low-cost outing or a post-swim sausage sizzle.
The centre is well set up for families and accessibility. Along with standard change rooms, there is a “family” change room that’s larger than a typical disabled toilet, giving parents more space to manage multiple kids or prams. Baby change tables are available, which makes life easier with infants and toddlers. The venue is guide-dog friendly and offers free parking, including ACROD bays and bike racks right outside.
One of the big perks of Swan Active Ballajura is its location. The complex sits alongside a nature play area, family centre, library and shopping centre with cafés and food outlets, so you can easily turn a quick swim into a half-day outing. Pop to the library for a story session, grab a coffee or lunch nearby, or let the kids burn off more energy in the Playground after their swim.
Overall, while Swan Active Ballajura isn’t the largest aquatic centre in Perth, it delivers plenty in terms of facilities, comfort and family-friendly design. The combination of heated lap and leisure pools, spa, gym, fitness classes, café and BBQs, plus convenient surrounding amenities, makes it a great choice for local families looking for regular lessons, casual swims or an easy, weather-proof day out.
