Nestled within the charming and iconic York Mill building, The Flour Mill Café is a delightful stop for coffee lovers, families, and anyone chasing a day of country calm and small-town character. Just a scenic 90-minute drive from Perth, York is Western Australia’s oldest inland town, known for its colonial architecture and rich heritage – and the café is perfectly positioned to enjoy both the flavour and the history.
The Flour Mill Café combines rustic charm with cosy comfort. The red-brick building it calls home is a local landmark dating back to 1892, originally operating as a flour mill during York’s thriving agricultural past.
Today, that same building stands tall as a celebration of history and community, housing not only the café but also the beautiful Flour Mill Emporium next door – a boutique gift and homewares store that’s well worth a browse.
But back to the café: the coffee is seriously good, thanks to beans roasted by Little Owl Coffee Roasters. Whether you’re a long black loyalist or after a creamy flat white, you won’t be disappointed. And yes – babychinos are a must for the little ones tagging along.
We popped in on a sunny day trip and were thrilled to find an inviting outdoor area with simple but thoughtful play equipment. A climbing frame, bridge, swings, and a quirky concrete dolphin slide kept our toddler busy while we sipped and soaked in the view.
There’s parking onsite, and a must-see photo spot behind the one building past the play zone – the perfect backdrop for a family snap.
Inside, the atmosphere is warm and air-conditioned, with shaded seating on the verandah for those who prefer to sit outdoors.
The menu features hearty, locally-inspired bites like BLATs with kasundi, ham bagels with sweet onion jam, and mini tarts with beetroot chutney – all made even better with Society Chutney, handcrafted by the café’s very own Karen. You can even purchase jars to take home, with vegan-friendly and sugar-free options available. Don’t forget to grab a La Paleta icy pole for dessert – 100% natural, made in WA, and perfect for hot country days.
The Flour Mill Café is open Monday to Saturday from 7:30am–3pm and Sundays 8:30am–2pm. Whether you’re chasing a great coffee, a relaxed family outing, or a peaceful spot rich with old-world charm, this little gem in York delivers.
