Mills Park in Beckenham is a huge 24-hectare community hub that combines beautiful wetlands, excellent sporting facilities and one of Perthโs best nature play spaces. Tucked just off Brixton Street and adjacent to Roe Highway, itโs the kind of park where you can easily spend a whole day โ with coffee in hand โ while the kids run, climb and explore.
The nature play space is spread out over a large area, so it never feels too crowded. Paths wind around and through the Playground, connecting to the surrounding wetlands, which makes it great for bikes and scooters as well as prams. Families often set up on the grassy areas surrounding the Playground, with plenty of room to throw down a picnic rug or base yourself under one of the many shelters with BBQs and picnic tables close by.

The play equipment has a real โadventure in the bushโ feel. Kids can clamber up the big smooth concrete slide built into the landscape, scramble over nearby rocks and logs, and test their balance across timber beams and stepping logs.

Thereโs a tall rope spider net to climb, a birds nest swing, timber teepees and lots of wooden structures to explore, from ladders and bridges to cubby-style platforms.

Older kids love the double flying fox and spinning roundabout, while the swinging hammock-style seating is popular with both children and relaxing parents.

Water play is a big highlight at Mills Park. Channels and pumps invite kids to dig, dam and redirect the flow, and the surrounding sand and mulch mean theyโre guaranteed to get a bit dirty โ which is half the fun. Enclosed shoes are a good idea, as the natural surfaces can be a little scratchy underfoot and youโll otherwise take half the Playground home in your shoes.

Adding to the appeal is the newer fully fenced, double-gated all-abilities Playground located near the BBQs and grassed area. A good section is shaded by sails, with plenty of seating for parents. This space offers a different mix of equipment to the main nature play area, with three types of swings (including a popular parent-and-baby swing), a large net see-saw, inclusive carousel, circle bouncer trampoline and a big accessible jeep rocker thatโs a hit with younger children.

Imagination play is encouraged through a โgeneral storeโ and play kitchen, while musical instrument panels add a sensory element, and nature play touches and carved, painted red-tailed black cockatoo โfeathersโ on timber elements tie the space back to the local environment. Most of the all-abilities Playground is soft-fall, with woodchips in the more natural zones, making it more accessible for a wide range of ages and abilities.

Beyond the main play area, a network of boardwalks and paths weaves through the wetlands and along Woodlupine and Bickley Brooks, offering shady spots to stroll, look for birds and enjoy the natural setting.

The wider reserve also includes multiple sports ovals, cricket nets, tennis courts and the popular Mills Park Skate Plaza, making it a real all-ages destination with something happening most weekends and after school.

Right beside the Playground is the modern Mills Park Centre. This houses toilets, a first aid room and community facilities, and itโs also home to the contemporary cafรฉ Fika on Brix, which overlooks the park. Itโs ideal for grabbing a takeaway coffee, breakfast or lunch while the kids play, or retreating inside for a break on hotter or colder days. There is plenty of parking around the reserve, including bays close to the Playground and skate park, and accessible toilets and parking are available.

With nature play, a dedicated all-abilities fenced Playground, water and sand play, a skate plaza, walking trails, sports fields and a cafรฉ all in one place, Mills Park Beckenham is a brilliant family-friendly destination, especially for kids who love to climb, balance and get a bit messy in the great outdoors.
