Rivers and Lakes in Perth – we’ve compiled a list of Rivers and Lakes in and around Perth, Western Australia that are family friendly and great for kids of all ages. Plan a family day out at one of Perth’s beautiful Rivers and Lakes this weekend.
North
Mrs Herbert’s Park is located right on the calm waters of Freshwater Bay in Claremont. The park slopes down towards the river with a playground, picnic area and toilets. Alternatively, head to picturesque Chidley Point Reserve in Mosman Park. Enjoy the calm waters of the river and a picnic or BBQ with friends.
South
Visit Quarantine Park in Bicton, home of the shallow waters of the Bicton Baths. The park is located on the top of the hill with an amazing view of the beautiful Swan River. It features a great fenced playground and barbecue area. Alternatively, take a trip to John Tonkin Reserve in East Fremantle. Play in the ship themed playground, grab a coffee from Zephyr Cafe and splash in the shallow river waters.
Perth Hills
Take a day trip to Lake Leschenaultia, a man-made lake situated in the country town of Chidlow. The calm waters of the lake and it’s sandy beaches make it the ideal spot for small children to play. Hire a canoe, or wander the 3km walking trail around the lake where you might meet the resident wildlife. Pack a lunch and stop at one of picnic tables and BBQ’s dotted around the lake. In addition, a campground is located nearby if you decide to make a weekend of it!
Chidley Point Reserve is an absolute gem of a place and one of my favourite places to hang out with the kids. Located on the banks of the Swan River in Mosman Park Chidley Point Reserve is the perfect spot to enjoy the calm waters of the river and a picnic or BBQ with friends. There are two car parks at Chidley Point Reserve. The upper level car park allows parking for a large number of cars. The lower level car park, right next to the beach, is accessed via a steep hill and only has parking for 6 cars. Read more…

Point Walter is a beautiful spot on the south bank of the Swan River perfect for picnics, swimming and playing in the not one but two playgrounds! The first playground is situated right next to The Walters River Cafe – which is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch coffee and cakes. If you have older children and fancy a relaxing lunch you could grab a table on the veranda that adjoins the playground so that the kids can play whilst you eat. There is also a kiosk attached to the cafe to get snack, ice-creams and takeaway coffee. Read more…

There is a little carpark alongside the Freshwater Bay Museum which is next door the park. The museum is unfortunately closed all this year for renovations, but we can’t wait to go back when it re-opens!. This museum was originally Mrs Herbert’s school, hence the name! The park slopes down towards the river (there is a pram friendly path most of the way) and Read more…
Lake Leschenaultia is a man-made lake situated in the country town of Chidlow, 50 minutes drive from Perth City. The lake was created by the W.A Government Railway to provide water to the steam engines that had come up the hill from John Forrest National Park and were journeying on to Northam, York or stations further east. Lake Leschenaultia is the perfect place for a family day trip. The calm waters of the lake teamed with it’s sandy beaches make it the ideal spot for small children to paddle in. For the older family members, you could choose to swim Read more…
