If you’re exploring Augusta with kids in tow, Granny’s Pool is the ultimate spot for a relaxed beach day. This picturesque little bay is a local family favourite thanks to its calm, crystal-clear waters and safe swimming conditions. Sheltered from the open ocean by reef and natural rock formations, Granny’s Pool is kindof like a giant saltwater bath – ideal for toddlers, young kids, and even parents looking for a peaceful paddle. The soft white sand is perfect for sandcastle-building sessions too.
The calm shallow water makes it easy for kids to splash around without worrying about big waves. Little ones can skip climbing over slippery rocks and enter the water via the walkway and steps. If you’re lucky, and remember to pack the goggles, you might even spot small “Nemo” fish darting around the rocks.
Bigger kids and parents will love to jump from the jetty or pontoon. And let me tell you that Southern Ocean water is COLD!
Bring a picnic blanket and some snacks, as there’s plenty of shady grassy space nearby for a relaxed family lunch under the pines. If you’d prefer to keep it simple, like us, grab a few takeaway snacks from the yummy Augusta Bakery before heading down to the beach.
In peak times you may also find a food truck parked up here. We enjoyed a few scoops of fruity froyo from the van (and enjoyed watching their dog chase a council worker’s hose of water)!
Once the kids have had enough swimming, be sure to let them have a little play on the Flinders Bay Ship Playground too.
Parking is easy and close to the beach, making it a stress-free option for families with little ones and LOTS to carry. Because Granny’s Pool is tucked away in Augusta, it’s often quieter than some of the busier beaches in the southwest. There’s changerooms, showers and toilets here too.
Granny’s Pool ticks all the boxes. Be sure to add it to your list for your next summer trip to Augusta.
