Dyoondalup Point Walter Playground, set along the stunning Swan River foreshore and next to Walterโs River Cafรฉ, has been transformed with a beautiful new play space that celebrates Noongar culture and the natural landscape. The centrepiece of the Playground is a striking tower structure, designed in collaboration with Noongar artist Sharyn Egan. It reflects stories of Djunda, a tall female spirit with long flowing white hair, and honours Dyoondalup (Point Walter) as a โplace of white sand.โ The result is a thoughtfully designed, culturally rich Playground that offers much more than just a run-of-the-mill play experience.

This is a very toddler-friendly Playground, with a mix of soft rubber and mulch underfoot and many natural wooden elements.

Little ones can easily make their way up the main tower via wide steps or a low climbing net, which leads to a smaller slide thatโs perfect for younger children.

From here, kids can crawl through a tunnel to the other side of the structure or challenge themselves by trying the firemanโs pole. For more adventurous children, climbing higher up the tower will take them to a viewing platform and a tall enclosed tunnel slide that spirals back down to ground level, which is sure to be a hit with older siblings.

Scattered around the main structure are various climbing logs with ropes, inviting children to balance, clamber and test their coordination. These natural-style play elements blend beautifully into the riverside setting and encourage imaginative, open-ended play.

Towards the back of the Playground is a spacious woodchip play area, well shaded by surrounding tall trees. Here, families will find a rope obstacle course and more stepping and climbing logs, offering plenty of opportunities for active play and gross motor skill development.

For parents and kids needing a breather, there are rope hammocks where you can stretch out, relax and enjoy the fresh river air. From here you can take in lovely views of the Swan River, with boats cruising past and birdlife to spot along the shoreline. The Playground also features detailed artworks and cultural elements tied into the design; my little one loved โtreasure huntingโ for these small artistic details hidden around the play space.

One of the big drawcards of Dyoondalup Point Walter Playground is its location right beside Walterโs River Cafรฉ. After our play, we headed inside for a light lunch, making it an easy outing with minimal packing required.

If you prefer something more casual, thereโs also a kiosk beside the cafรฉ serving takeaway coffee, snacks and ice creams, ideal for a post-play treat or a riverside picnic.

Beyond the Playground itself, Point Walter Reserve is a fantastic destination for a full family day out. The calm river waters and sandy foreshore make it a lovely spot for a paddle or swim, especially on a warm day.

The reserve is well-equipped with family-friendly amenities including BBQs, picnic tables, public toilets, a quick rinse shower area and free parking, making it simple to set up for a relaxed picnic or barbecue while the kids move between the water and the Playground.

With its combination of cultural storytelling, thoughtful design and stunning riverside location, Dyoondalup Point Walter Playground is a wonderful choice for families looking to explore somewhere special in Perth.
