Wireless Hill Nature Playspace, Ardross

Just 5 minutes drive from Garden City Shopping Centre, atop Wireless Hill, is a beautiful is Wireless Hill Nature Playspace.

We arrived in the middle of the day, and amazingly the play area is naturally shaded by the surrounding trees, even at noon. It was so quiet and peaceful, with by birdsong come from the surrounding bush land.

Miss almost 3 really enjoyed Wireless Hill Nature Playspace . She found lots of balancing beams, logs and rocks to climb. There are steps carved out of logs running up to a platform. A lot of the play area is surrounded by garden beds planted out with native plants. The area should be a riot of colour come springtime!

There’s a large birds nest swing with rubber soft fall beneath, and a large concrete sand table with a recycled tyre scoop. Miss almost 3 enjoyed pouring sand from the large sandpit through the funnel set in the sand table.

We found communications tubes connecting different parts of the playground. Miss almost 3 enjoyed testing these out with her Nanna.

Communication of different kinds is a theme throughout the playground. We found signs dotted among the play equipment with phases and different ways to communicate them, listed in English, Aboriginal, Morse code and Australian sign language.

Historically, Wireless Hill was used for a number of years for radio communications, and played a role in radio communications in Western Australia during World War II. One of the buildings on the hill still houses a community radio station.

Another of the buildings houses a museum in tribute to the radio communications history. This is due to reopen in February 2017.

A short walk from the playground is a small tower with a viewing platform. This tower used to be an anchor point for the antenna that once stood on the hill. There is a great view from the platform, looking out over the nearby suburbs, the river and bush land, and all the way across to the city skyline.

Adjacent to the tower is a war memorial with poignant photos and wording, and set nearby in the grass is a plaque representing the historical and cultural significance of Wireless Hill to the local Aboriginal people.

Beside the playground, on either side, are covered BBQs with picnic tables, and public toilet facilities are located in the back of the nearby radio station building. If you’re in need refreshment, a water fountain is on the path at the end of the playground nearest the swing. With lots of grassy area, this would be a good spot for a family get-together or birthday party.

Also, if you’ve an interest in bushwalking, I’m told there are some great tracks through the bush up here, especially in wildflower season. Then there is an abundance bright kangaroo paw flowers, amongst other flowering natives. If you go walking, don’t forget to take plenty of water, and wear your enclosed shoes in case of snakes!

With lots to see and do,Wireless Hill Nature Playspace  is well worth a visit!

Wireless Hill Nature Playspace is located on top of Wireless Hill, on Telefunken Drive, Ardross. There is lots of roadside parking available.
