If you’re planning one of the best Australia road trips with the kids and a caravan in tow, the season matters as much as the route. A summer trip up north can mean wet season chaos, while the same drive in winter is dry, mild and perfect for little ones who hate being stuck in the car too long.

Here are 15 family-friendly road trips, organised by season, to help you match the destination to the right time of year.

Summer (December to February)

Summer means heat across most of the country, but a few pockets shine.

Margaret River, WA. Mild coastal weather, easy beaches for younger kids and enough wineries and farm gates nearby to keep the grown-ups happy.

Tasmania’s East Coast. Summer is the best window here. Wineglass Bay and the Bay of Fires are calm and swimmable, with manageable crowds outside late December.

The Victorian High Country. Bright, Mount Buffalo and the Ovens River Valley stay cooler than the coast, with swimming holes and short walks that suit easily bored kids.

Esperance and the South Coast, WA. Some of the whitest sand in the country, with water warm enough to swim in without complaints.

Autumn (March to May)

Autumn is widely considered the easiest season to travel with kids. The heat drops, school holidays line up nicely and most of the country opens back up.

The Victorian High Country, again. Autumn colour around Bright in late April is a different trip entirely, and it’s easy on younger kids with short distances between stop

Flinders Ranges, SA. Wilpena Pound and the surrounding gorges are far more comfortable than in summer, with open space for kids to run around safely at camp.

Southern Forests, WA. Giant karri trees, swimming holes and farm stays around Pemberton and Manjimup, with easy driving and short legs between stops

The NSW South Coast. Quiet beaches, calmer surf than in summer and caravan parks are far easier to book once school holiday crowds clear out.

Winter (June to August)

Winter is when southern families head north, and for good reason. The Top End and the Kimberley are dry, mild and at their best.

Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef, WA. Whale shark season runs through winter, and the water stays calm, making it one of the few snorkelling spots gentle enough for kids to genuinely enjoy.

Kakadu, NT. Dry season means open roads, swimmable waterfalls and none of the wet season closures that catch out summer travellers.

Gibb River Road, WA. This one’s for families with off-road experience and the right setup, but winter is the only sensible time to attempt it: gorges, fewer crowds and real outback scenery.

The Snowy Mountains, NSW/ACT. Not the obvious caravan season, but for families chasing real snow without flying overseas, a winter run to Jindabyne and Thredbo is hard to beat. Pack warm gear and check chain requirements.

Spring (September to November)

Spring is short but spectacular in WA and a great shoulder season for dodging both the cold and the crowds.

The WA Wildflower Trail. From Perth up through Geraldton and Kalbarri, the wildflowers from August through October are something most kids have never seen before

The Nullarbor Crossing. Spring is the only realistic window. Too hot in summer, too booked out in autumn. Whale watching at the Head of Bight is a bonus most families don’t expect.

The Great Ocean Road, Victoria. Spring brings mild weather and thinner crowds than the summer rush, plus the Otways are at their greenest after winter rain.

Quick tips for caravanning with kids

A few things make caravan trips easier with kids along, whatever season you’re chasing. Shorter daily drives beat long hauls, especially with younger children who lose patience fast. An outdoor setup that makes it easy to cook, eat and hang out outside the van means less mess inside and more room for everyone after a week or two on the road. Checking what the van is built for, insulation, ventilation and solar capacity, makes a real difference to comfort once you’re parked up for the night.

Time to start planning

However you use this list, we hope it helps your family find a trip that works for the season you’re travelling in. There’s nothing like pulling into a new spot with the kids buzzing in the back seat, the van set up just right and a whole new part of the country to explore. Safe travels, and we hope some of these make it onto your plans this year.
