Avon Park in York, also known locally as Pioneer Avon Park, has been extensively redeveloped and is now one of the Avon Valleyโs standout family Playground destinations. Set along the banks of the Avon River on Lowe Street, it combines a big, grassy riverside park with a brilliant nature play space, skate park and plenty of facilities, making it an ideal stop on a York day trip or overnighter.

The nature-based Playground uses lots of timber, stone and natural elements, and thereโs a good amount of shade from both trees and shelters. Families will find multiple sheltered picnic tables, free electric BBQs and toilets close by, so itโs easy to settle in for a few hours or make it your main picnic spot while exploring historic York. The park is also part of a larger riverside precinct that includes the swinging bridge, river walk trail and performance space, so it feels more like a full destination than just a local Playground.
Kids will likely bolt straight for the double flying fox, which offers both an all-abilities seat and a pommel seat, so siblings and friends of different ages and abilities can ride together.

The water play and dry creek bed are another major drawcard, especially for younger children who love to get wet and sandy โ pack a towel and spare clothes, because itโs very tempting to splash and dig here.

Around the Playground there are several types of swings including a bucket swing for little ones, a traditional swing and a basket swing, giving plenty of options for different ages.

Thereโs a great mix of equipment to challenge kids physically and keep them exploring. Children can bounce on modern and traditional timber seesaws, wind their way through a colourful timber maze, or climb and clamber up the large timber stack climber.

An embanked slide with log steppers and a ladder provides fun and manageable climbing for preschoolers and early primary children, while still being interesting enough for older kids to race up and down. The overall design encourages kids to move between elements, balance, climb and problem-solve, rather than just playing on one big structure.

Families with bikes, scooters or skateboards should bring them along, because the skate park right next to the Playground is a huge bonus. It features a bowl, quarter pipe, rails, ramps and more, giving confident riders plenty to practice on while younger children stick to the flatter sections.

With the large grassed areas alongside, itโs easy for parents to spread out a picnic rug and keep an eye on kids between the Playground and skate park. The whole park runs parallel to the Avon River, which adds a lovely country-town atmosphere and views while you play.
On the north side of the park youโll find the famous swinging bridge, which crosses the river and is a bit of an attraction in itself. Kids usually love the gentle wobble of the bridge, and itโs a great vantage point to spot ducks and other birdlife along the water. Standing in the middle of the bridge gives you beautiful views both up and down the Avon River. On the far side of the bridge you can join the Avon River Walk Trail, with the rotunda acting as the trail head for this scenic riverside walk. Itโs an easy way to add a short family stroll before or after Playground time.

Facilities are a strong point here. As well as BBQs, seating, toilets and the Playground itself, Avon Park also includes a sound stage used for community events and performances, with power available via key hire from the Shire of York. The park is a large, open, grassed area, so thereโs loads of room for ball games and running around. York is also an RV-friendly town, with 24โhour free RV parking and a dump point across the river at Janet Millett Lane, just opposite the park, making this a very practical stop for travelling families
With ample parking, plenty of shade and its prime riverside location within walking distance of Yorkโs main street cafes and shops, itโs an excellent place to break up a country drive, stretch little legs and soak up some Avon Valley charm.
