Kent Street Weir Pump Track is now part of a much bigger, thoughtfully redeveloped precinct on the banks of the Canning River, making it a brilliant destination for families with kids who ride โ and for those whoโd rather explore, picnic or play nearby.

The asphalt pump track itself has been professionally designed and built by Common Ground to suit all skill levels, from wobbly beginners on balance bikes to confident BMX and mountain bike riders. There are two flowing, endless loops featuring rollers, berms, jumps and a dedicated jump line for more advanced riders who enjoy getting some air.

At the entry youโll find a clear signboard mapping out the track, showing beginner, intermediate and advanced lines with arrows indicating direction, which really helps families and mixed-ability groups ride safely together.

The track is set right alongside the main Kent Street Weir car park, so itโs easy to find as you drive in. This does mean itโs very popular on weekends and school holidays, and parking can spill into nearby streets, so itโs worth arriving early or being prepared for a short walk. Around the track there are a few park benches, including one with good natural shade, and pockets of grass where families often spread out picnic rugs and base themselves for the morning while kids lap the circuit. Thereโs no shade structure directly over the track, so sun protection is a must.

One of the big drawcards of this pump track is how well it links into everything else at Kent Street Weir. If your child finds the jumps a bit intimidating, you can roll straight onto the shared paths that wind through Canning River Regional Park for a gentler family ride. From here you can connect to several short walks and ride-friendly loops such as the Banksia Hill Loop, Greenfield Street Bridge Loop and other river trails, making it easy to turn a quick spin into a full morning exploring the river and wetlands.

The wider Kent Street Weir Precinct has been undergoing major upgrades under a long-term plan by the City of Canning, with new recreation facilities, improved paths and an enhanced wetland buffer all designed to protect the environment and make the area more family-friendly. A new district-level play space is currently in the works, with plans for a junior play zone, more challenging equipment for older kids, water and sensory play, BBQs, picnic spots and accessible paths. Once open, this will sit within easy walking distance of the pump track and will give families even more reasons to linger.
Kent Street Weir itself is a lovely spot for a picnic or a play before or after riding. The riverside parkland offers barbecues, shaded picnic tables, open grass, a small Playground, barbecue facilities and a canoe launch point, as well as the excellent Canning River Eco Education Centre (CREEC), which runs school holiday and community programs focused on the local environment. Dogs are permitted in the wider park on a leash, and there is now a large, fully fenced offโleash dog exercise area with shelters, seating, sand digging pit, drinking fountain and lighting, created as part of the precinct upgrades. Public toilets are close by and include accessible facilities.

Food and coffee are taken care of by the much-loved Canning River Cafรฉ, just a short stroll from the pump track. Itโs handy for takeaway coffees while you supervise riders, or for sitting down to breakfast or lunch before heading back out for more laps or a riverside wander. On selected days, families can also combine a visit with a ride on the Castledare Miniature Railway, which winds for over 5km through the nearby Fern Lagoon area on public running days.

Throughout the precinct there is a strong focus on celebrating Whadjuk Noongar culture and caring for the river environment. A Noongar Cultural Heritage Management Plan guides development in the area, and interpretive features help share stories about Djarlgarro Beeliar (Canning River) and its significance for Traditional Owners. Itโs a great place to spark conversations with kids about Country, seasons and local wildlife as you explore.
With its smooth, flowing track, clear skillโlevel signage, easy access to paths and riverside facilities, and the promise of a major new Playground and other upgrades, Kent Street Weir Pump Track is a fantastic choice for families looking for an active day out. Pack the bikes, scooters or skateboards, hats and water bottles, and plan to stay longer than you think โ thereโs a lot more here than โjustโ a pump track.
