Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to playgrounds. Especially with toddlers. Sometimes you just want a smaller playground where you know you can keep them within view and be within their abilities to play. Quinns Rocks is home to many playgrounds but there are two within a short walk from each other meaning you have the choice of one or both.
James Cook Playground is a favourite of mine. I love that the theme of a pirate ship encourages my daughter not only to play but also to express her imagination.
We often pretend to sail out to sea with her steering the ship. It features a climbing rope, a ladder, a spyglass steering wheel, and a slide. The ship-shaped playground has a lot to offer for a small park.
With a sand-based play area, swing, and baby swing, it’s a great playground for younger toddlers. With an undercover picnic table and a large field, you can easily bring some balls and snacks and get an hour or two out of this park. It’s also home to a nature walk right next to the play area, which we like to use as our way to enter and exit the park. It’s a great way to go on a little explore with the kids.
A short walk away is Jack Barlow Park, another boat-themed play area. Taking on a steamboat design, it is still great for young toddlers but is also a bit bigger, so it is good for older kids as well.
Another sand-based play area, it features a slide, balancing points, swings and baby swings, and a large climbing frame. There is also a grass area next to it, so kids can still run around, just on a smaller scale.
Two good local parks that are normally a bit quieter and great for toddlers.
