Located at the Museum of the Great Southern on Residency Road, Albany, the Brig Amity is a full-size replica of the historic vessel that brought the first European settlers and convicts to Albany in 1826. Built in the 1970s to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Albany’s settlement, this interactive maritime exhibit allows visitors to explore three levels of an authentic sailing vessel, complete with sleeping quarters and cargo holds.
Stand-Out Feature:
The interactive audio guide experience brings the ship’s history to life, with numbered plaques throughout the vessel that correspond to informative audio presentations about different areas of the ship. Children can explore authentic features like the “pirate steering wheel” on the top deck and climb into the ship’s bunks for an immersive historical experience.
Top Tip:
Best suited for children aged 3 and above due to steep ladders and tight spaces. Adult supervision is required when using the ladders between decks. Entry is very affordable at $5 for adults, $4 for concession cardholders, and $2 for children aged 4 and up. Visit earlier in the day to meet the knowledgeable volunteers who can enhance your experience with additional historical information.
