Tucked on the corner of Gascoyne Parkway and Timberlane Drive in Woodvale, Gascoyne Park is a lovely, leafy local Playground with a strong nature-play feel. The park blends traditional Playground equipment with logs, rocks and mature trees, making it a fun spot for kids who love to climb, balance and explore.

The first thing many children will notice is the carved wooden crocodile. Fashioned from a log with a smoothed, painted head and tail, heโs perfect for balancing along or for sparking imaginative games โ feeding him sand and sticks is almost a rite of passage for little visitors!

The main play structure offers plenty of variety for mixed ages. Kids can choose between a double slide and a curly slide, and access them via different ladders, wooden climbing walls and a climbing web. A firemanโs pole and rope bridge add extra challenge for confident climbers.

Underneath the structure, steering wheels and a little playhouse/shop area encourage pretend play, whether itโs โdriving through the jungleโ or running a make-believe cafรฉ.

Older children are well catered for with a flying fox and a ninja warriorโstyle trail of swinging platforms and handles. These are great for burning off energy and testing balance and upper-body strength.

Around the main sand play area, large rocks, logs and stone blocks extend the play space and invite kids to scramble, jump and balance beyond the formal equipment.

A small swing set sits beside the sandpit, with one regular swing and one toddler swing. The swings are set over rubbery softfall for a bit of extra cushioning when little legs forget to hold on. The rest of the Playground is largely sand-based, which is ideal for digging and reduces the impact of the occasional tumble.

Shaded seating is scattered around the park. There is a picnic table close to the play area which would work nicely for a relaxed birthday party or afternoon tea. Additional bench seating is positioned to give parents and carers a good view of the Playground while still making the most of the shade from nearby trees.

What really sets Gascoyne Park apart is its lush planting. Groves of palms, cycads and native eucalyptus trees, maintained by the City of Joondalup in partnership with The Palm and Cycad Society of Western Australia, create a real โmini jungleโ atmosphere. This open, leafy understory gives children space to explore while still feeling like theyโre on an adventure โ itโs an easy backdrop for dinosaur games, jungle explorers or tropical-themed parties.

Surrounding the Playground are generous grassed areas, perfect for ball games, frisbee or setting up a picnic rug. The park is dog-friendly, and dogs are permitted off leash, so itโs a handy spot to combine a Playground visit with some exercise for the family pet. Paths weave through the trees and around the Playground, and because they are mostly flat, theyโre well suited to younger kids practising on bikes or scooters.

There are a couple of practical points to keep in mind when planning a visit. There are no public toilets onsite, so itโs worth timing your trip or knowing where your next stop will be. Shade over the actual play equipment is limited, as there are no shade sails, so the Playground can get hot in the middle of the day, especially in summer. The surrounding trees do cast shade at certain times, but itโs wise to bring hats, sunscreen, plenty of water and perhaps long shorts or pants to protect little legs from hot slide surfaces.

Combined with its nature feel, off-leash dog area and good mix of equipment, Gascoyne Park works well as a relaxed local meet-up spot for playdates, casual birthday parties or a quick run-around after school.
Overall, Gascoyne Park in Woodvale is a charming, neighbourhood-style Playground with lots of opportunities for climbing, balancing and imaginative play, all wrapped in a leafy, jungle-like setting.
