Tucked on the corner of Royal and Lockwood Streets in Yokine, Royal Lockwood Reserve is a modern fenced Playground that blends nature play with traditional equipment, making it a handy little spot for local families, especially those with toddlers and young primary schoolers.
Once you step through the gate, you’re greeted by a sweet nature play area to the right. Here you’ll find balancing logs, stepping logs and a wooden teepee, all set on a thick bed of woodchips and surrounded by established shade trees that were retained when the Playground was built. It’s a lovely spot for kids to climb, balance and play imaginatively, and the soft surface adds peace of mind for parents.
Following the footpath into the centre of the Playground, you’ll come to a large sandpit area filled with fine white sand and traditional play equipment. The main climbing structure features two slides at different heights – one straight and one curved – so little ones can start on the smaller slide and work their way up.
On the higher platform there’s a steering wheel and a fireman’s pole for more confident climbers, while underneath you’ll find a little “shop” and a counting game tucked into the shade for younger kids who love pretend play.
Extending from this main structure are monkey bars and a short flying fox, which are ideal for older or more adventurous children looking for a bit of a challenge.
In the surrounding sand you’ll also find a spring rocker and a swing set with both a toddler seat and a regular swing – always a favourite with younger visitors.
On the left side of the Playground, kids can burn off extra energy on the hopscotch squares and down-ball court. The hopscotch grid is bright and inviting, and is often a surprising hit with preschoolers who enjoy jumping, counting and making up their own games.
There’s a small picnic area alongside the play space, with two park benches and a picnic table with bench seating.
A looping footpath circles the Playground and links the two gated entrances, making it perfect for kids to bring along scooters or small bikes. It’s a great little circuit for learner riders who are still gaining confidence, and a nice way for kids to mix riding laps with playing on the equipment.
One of the biggest drawcards of Royal Lockwood Reserve is that it’s fully fenced, providing a safe buffer from busy Royal Street. This makes it a particularly good choice for families with toddlers or children who tend to wander, as they can explore the different sections of the Playground more freely while carers relax a little.
There are street parking bays available along Lockwood Street, and the reserve is easy to combine with other local outings. If you’re making a morning or afternoon of it, you could pair a Playground visit with a stop at the nearby Mid-Century Cafe and Collectables, just a short drive away, for coffee, a light meal and some extra indoor playtime.
Overall, Royal Lockwood Reserve is a neat neighbourhood Playground with a bit of everything – nature elements, sand play, climbing, swinging, and space to ride – all wrapped up in a safe, fenced setting that suits younger families particularly well.
