Curtis Park Girrawheen – just off of Marangaroo Drive in Girrawheen, there is a delightful naturally shaded park with some surprising extras. Curtis Park boasts not only a lovely playground, but also some life-sized board games to keep the kids busy.
Curtis Park Girrawheen was revamped in 2015 to be the bright, fresh park you see now. The main playground has three slides of different sizes and shapes – a straight one, a curved one, and a corkscrew one.
The play equipment is spread over several levels, connected by ladders and wooden bridges, one of which was a wobbly bridge with rope and chain. It’s about 5ft up, so younger children may require some assistance. My little Miss enjoyed the challenge!
There is also a freestanding spring rocker see-saw, which Little Miss liked. The playground area is surrounded by rubbery soft fall matting in case of tumbles.
For older children, there is a rope web for climbing, monkey bars, a flying fox and a fireman’s pole. A rebound wall stands close by the playground, which would be good for kicking or bouncing a ball against or maybe for practicing handballing a footy.
Just across a little bridge nearby, Curtis Park has a group of swings. There are two toddler swings and two regular swings, and also a birds nest swing. These have wood chips spread underneath, which is great if you’re not a big fan of sand!
The life-sized board games all have an insect theme. The first of the board games we came across was a ladybird game called ‘The Abacus’. It has a board with instructions for the game, and involves spinning an arrow as a dice to roll a number. My little Miss enjoyed playing her own hopscotch type game she made up.
A little further away, we found the ‘Counting /Take Away Game’, featuring a cute caterpillar with body segments numbered 1-20. Again, there is a board explaining how to play. This one involves spinning for a number, and jumping that many numbers of segments until the end, or taking away.
Adjacent to the caterpillar is a butterfly ‘Times’ game. This builds upon previous game. Instead of adding or subtracting, you multiply to get the number you go to.
With the mathematical themes, these games would be a fun and active way to practice mathematic principles with school aged children. They were a bit over miss almost three’s head, but she loved the bugs none the less.
In addition to the playground and board games, Curtis Park Girrawheen has lots of paths winding through it. It would be a good spot to bring scooters or skates for a whiz around.
The park isn’t fenced, but the play equipment is set well back away from the road so little runners are unlikely to get into trouble. The streets surrounding are pretty quiet, which takes some of the stress off too.
Curtis Park is located between Curtis Way and Hatfield Way in Girrawheen.
Parking is best off Hatfield Way, accessed from Amberton Avenue.
