Heathcote Reserve in Applecross is one of Perthโs original โsuper Playgroundsโ and it still feels like a proper day-out destination rather than just a quick local park stop.

Perched high above the Swan River, it offers sweeping views across to the city skyline, big lawns for picnics and play, and loads of space for kids to burn energy while adults actually relax for a moment. Being part of the broader Goolugatup Heathcote cultural precinct means thereโs more to explore here than โjustโ a Playground, so itโs a spot that works well for repeat visits and for impressing out-of-town visitors.

The centrepiece is the huge ship-themed Playground, instantly recognisable from a distance and still a firm favourite with Perth families. Children can scramble up ramps and ladders, duck through tunnels and โsecretโ hideouts, cross bridges, and pop up at various lookout points to survey the park below.

Itโs ideal for imaginative play โ one minute itโs a pirate ship, the next a cruise liner or rescue vessel โ and there are multiple slides and escape routes so kids can invent endless scenarios. The equipment offers a good mix of challenge and accessibility; confident climbers can push themselves, while less adventurous kids can still find plenty to do without feeling overwhelmed.

Younger children are well catered for too. Off to one side of the main structure is an area that works nicely for toddlers and preschoolers, with gentler slides, a larger sandpit and a digger thatโs usually in high demand.

There are also bucket swings in this section for littler ones. The layout makes it possible to keep a close eye on small children from nearby seating, which is helpful if youโre juggling siblings of different ages. Sand underfoot around much of the equipment softens tumbles, and the whole space has that classic โall-day playโ feel.

The setting itself is a big part of the appeal. Goolugatup Heathcote Reserve is a heritage-listed site within the Heathcote Cultural Precinct, home to landscaped gardens, historic buildings and thriving cultural activities including a contemporary art gallery, artist studios and workshop spaces. Even if youโre mainly there for the Playground, the manicured lawns, mature trees and river backdrop make it feel special. Families often bring bikes, balls and frisbees to make the most of the open grassed areas before or after Playground time.
Food and coffee are easy to sort on site. The precinct is home to Tucci, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant set within the historic buildings, open for lunch and dinner on selected days, plus breakfast on Sundays. Tucci also runs a gelato kiosk which serves creamy gelato, coffee, cakes and grab-and-go snacks on selected days, perfect for a Playground bribe or a quick caffeine fix while you take in the river views. Check current opening hours before you go, as restaurant and kiosk times differ across the week.
Facilities are excellent and very family-friendly. There are public BBQs and shaded grassed picnic areas that are free for everyone to use, with no need to book for casual picnics or birthday catchโups. Toilets are available both in the grounds and in the gallery buildings, and parking is generally plentiful, including bays suitable for buses and ACROD parking near the main facilities.
One important note for pet-loving families is that dogs are not permitted on the grounds, with the exception of assistance animals. If youโre used to bringing the family dog to parks, youโll need to leave them at home for this outing. Also keep in mind that while the grounds are open 24/7, the cultural facilities and restaurant operate on set hours, and opening times may change around public holidays and special events.
With its expansive, imaginative Playground, river views, cultural facilities and great picnic infrastructure, Heathcote Reserve continues to be one of Perthโs most popular family destinations. Whether you pop in for a quick play and gelato or linger for a long picnic and gallery wander, itโs a spot that ticks a lot of boxes for families with kids of all ages.
