Dianella Open Space Playground, part of the Dianella Regional Open Space, is one of the most exciting and challenging Playgrounds in Perth for adventurous kids. Located just off Light Street, this large nature‑inspired playspace is tucked into the surrounding bushland. This gives it a an explore and discover feeling. With a mix of sand and rubber play areas and big climbing opportunities, there are plenty of ways for kids to test out their balance and bravery.
The toddler area features play equipment designed with younger children in mind, which is covered by shade sails in the summer months. This area includes low platforms with two slides, climbing slopes, nets, rockers and swings. There are also a set of play binoculars that are perfect for encouraging imaginative play. Little explorers can spy on the rest of the playground, pretend to be the captain of a ship and more!
Moving on from the smaller children’s play structure, the next section is built around a large sandpit. This features a huge circular pendulum swing mounted on a tripod. This big group swing is always popular with kids of all ages, and even parents who are happy to hop on and share the ride.
In addition to the swing, there is a dedicated water play area. This features a water pump with a large bowl beneath, inviting kids to work together to pump, divert and dam the flowing water. It’s a great space for sensory play, though you’ll want to pack a change of clothes or a towel for the ride home. Always a favourite with Miss 11 when she was younger.
Another part of the Playground is set among woodchips and offers something of an obstacle course. With balancing beams, ropes and monkey ropes, it looks quite challenging at first glance. But kids of all ages will love testing their skills! This is a good zone for building coordination and confidence, and it connects nicely to the more adventurous nature play elements beyond. 
A favourite feature of Dianella Open Space Playground for my Miss 11 is the impressive climbing and nature play area built into limestone, rocks and logs. Children can clamber up a rock summit that includes a climbing wall with hand holds, scramble over boulders, and walk along timber balance logs. Confident kids often navigate this area with ease and delight, but it is high and exposed in places. I will admit this section has sometimes caused me anxiety as a parent, worrying my child could fall. But it has really helped build her confidence in her own abilities. The design clearly aims to challenge kids, encourage independence and give them a sense of achievement, but close supervision is best for very young children.
On the other side of the rock and log features you’ll find more ways to climb down and up, including a large log descent and the climbing wall ascent.
Nearby, a sunken play area with little hut‑style cubbies provides cosy nooks for hide‑and‑seek and imaginative games. There’s also a staircase of sandbags to climb, adding yet another textural, physical challenge.
Throughout the playground you’ll find other favourites such as rockers and other smaller swings among the rubber based play zones. So there is genuinely something to suit a wide range of ages and abilities.
For older children who may have outgrown the playground equipment or feel they are too old, there are options available for them too. At the far end of the playground nearest to Light Street, there is a basketball court and a four square court. Near to the carpark, there is a huge oval for kicking footballs or running around with the family dog.
While the play equipment is excellent, there is also picnic and barbecue facilities available, with a couple of covered picnic tables available at either end of the playground. Perfect for hosting a family get together or a small birthday party. For bigger parties, there is a community hall adjacent which can be hired through City of Stirling.
Public toilets are available adjacent to the car park area. Parking is generous, with around 184 bays and 10 accessible bays in the main car park off Light Street, though spaces can still fill up at peak sporting times.
Overall, Dianella Open Space Playground is a fantastic destination if you’re looking for a big, adventurous playspace that will really wear the kids out. It combines a good range of toddler play equipment with more challenging nature play for older children. This remains a brilliant spot for active families who love climbing, exploring and getting a bit grubby outdoors. Pack a hat, sunscreen and head on out for a day of fun!
