Lake Leschenaultia, found close to Mundaring, is a top day out in the Perth Hills for families. There’s swimming, bike riding, bushwalking, picnicking and now there’s even more reason to visit. The tired old metal boat play equipment has gone – replaced by a beautifully crafted timber train playground!
Found next to the campsite office, the new playground (opened December 2023) features a train and slide, as well as many nature play elements, like stepping logs.
The lake was constructed over a century ago to provide water for the passing steam trains. It’s lovely to see a train, station and tunnel feature in this playground.
There’s natural shade from the tall tress, as well as a shaded picnic table and a little lawn to sit on.
After the kids have played on the playground, there’s much more to explore at Lake Lesch!
Public toilets are located next to the main carpark. Free drinking water fountains are also found in the main beach area. The lake is a beautiful spot for a picnic or BBQ, as well as watersports (BYO or hire a canoe on school holidays/weekends in season).
Swimming to the pontoon and jumping off is lots of fun too!
Build your Mountain Bike skills on the pump track. There are multiple MTB trails, including the super easy Railway Run 700m trail that follows the old mini rail line. The kids will love discovering the old railway station too! More on the Lake Leschenaultia mountain bike trails here.
A flat 3km loop trail has wide gravel tracks. There are lots of birds and wildlife to see along the way. It’s perfect for a cruisy family ride together, and it’s easy to walk too.
You can even camp at Lake Leschenaultia! Be sure to pack a picnic, throw the bikes in the car, and head to the Perth Hills for an outdoor adventure at Lake Lesch for an action-packed and free day out that the kids will absolutely love.
*Please check Lake Leschenaultia’s Facebook page before visiting on a hot day. The lake closes to visitors if the shire deems the Fire Danger Rating a risk to safety *
