Did you know that Lake Leschenaultia has a pump track? If you want to start the kid’s love of mountain biking early, Lake Lesch is a perfect place to begin, with wide, flat gravel pathways and a fun pump track too. Found near the main entrance of lovely Lake Leschenaultia, the Lake Leschenaultia Pump Track will get the whole family’s heart rate up!
Not sure what a pump track is exactly? It’s a continuous loop track (gravel in this case), that you can ride with a minimal amount of peddling, simply using momentum. The idea is the rider gets used to the feel of the bike responding to the up and downhill slopes and banked turns. It’s a great introduction to mountain biking. The goal is to ride the loop of the pump track without ever having to pedal or to use the break.
Why not take it in turns doing timed laps with the kids? The pump track is a good spot to let the kids practice accelerating up and descending down bumps, hills, and grades.
If your children are young and haven’t built up their mountain biking confidence, take them on an easy ride around the lake. The flat 3km loop trail has wide gravel tracks. There are lots of birds and wildlife to see along the way. It’s perfect for a cruisy family ride together.
Want to try the kids on a super easy mountain bike trail? The Railway Run is the best of Lake Leschenaultia’s MTB tracks to start on for kids. The flat 700m trail follows the old mini rail line. The kids will love discovering the old railway station too!
With a short ride to the northwest side of the lake, you’ll find the start point (trail head) of the eight more serious MTB trails. These vary in length and difficulty; some even include exhilarating ramps. With names like “Yeehaa” and “Wahoo” they are guaranteed great fun! Public toilets are located next to the main carpark. Free drinking water fountains are also found in the main beach area. The lake is a beautiful spot for a post-ride picnic or BBQ, as well as watersports and swimming.
Plus you can even camp at the lake!
