If you are looking for a relaxed outdoor spot in Fremantle where the whole family can unwind, Virginia Ryan Park is worth discovering. Tucked away yet easy to reach from Watkins Street and Bolton Way, this leafy park feels welcoming from the moment you arrive, with its colourful, distinctive entry sign setting the tone for what is to come.
The recent playground upgrade creates a beautiful new space that combines active play with sensory experiences and natural elements. Drawing inspiration from the colours and floral design elements on the entry signage, this custom playground creates a unique identity that reflects the character of the park- a vibrant modern playground with its clever use of natural timber and limestone elements, surrounded by mature trees and colourful poles.

One of the first things children run for is the rock-inspired play structure, complete with a slide built into the rocks, giving them plenty of opportunities to climb, scramble, and play.

The slide is toddler-friendly, which adds a little excitement for those who enjoy some speed, while the monkey bars offer an opportunity to build strength and coordination as they make their way across.
Little adventurers will find plenty to discover too. The balance trail encourages children to test their coordination and strength at their own pace while sensory play features throughout the playground invite them to explore through touch, movement and hands-on play.
We also love the use of colourful poles and sun-catchers throughout the play unit! Alongside the mature trees and natural setting, they add a bright and playful touch without taking away the park’s peaceful character.

Another standout feature is the accessible combination play unit, with ramp access connecting directly to the surrounding footpath network. It means more children and visitors with mobility limitations can access and enjoy the play equipment together.
And the improvement doesn’t stop at the playground. The surrounding park has received 27 native trees and a thousand native shrubs, helping increase shade and biodiversity while supporting more sustainable water use.
There is also an off-leash dog exercise area so the whole family can enjoy the outing. Just remember that dogs are not permitted inside the playground itself. The spacious grassy lawn is perfect for the children to run around, with benches found along the park. Unfortunately, there are no toilets or BBQ facilities in this park, only a water fountain. There is no shade over the playground, just from the surrounding mature trees, so make sure to have sun protection on, and parking is limited to the surrounding streets.
