Perched on the lively West Deck at Karrinyup Shopping Centre, The Cubby is a true “super Playground” and an easy favourite for families looking to combine shopping, dining and playtime. Part of Karrinyup’s huge redevelopment, this 950sqm outdoor play space feels more like a destination in its own right than a typical shopping centre Playground.
The hero of the space is the enormous multi-level cubby house. At around 16 metres long and 5 metres high, it towers over the play area and instantly draws kids in. The structure is packed with ways to climb, slide and explore, including ladders, ropes, fireman’s poles, swings, music panels, a rock climbing wall and a fun talking tube. The standout for many kids is the 4-metre twirly slide – you can expect them to race back up for “just one more go” again and again.
Younger children aren’t forgotten, with different zones spread around the main cubby so families can find a spot that suits everyone.
On the left side you’ll find a soft-fall area with in-ground trampolines, a spring cup and swinging benches, perfect for toddlers and preschoolers who love to bounce but might not be ready for the big slide.
On the right, a generous sand play area features a mud kitchen where little chefs can whip up sandy “creations” for ages.
At the far end, a small nature play zone with stepping logs leads to another, much smaller sandpit. This little pocket is especially good for babies and younger toddlers who are just getting used to busier play spaces but still need a more contained, gentle area to explore.
One of the biggest drawcards for many families is that The Cubby includes a water play zone. Kids can splash and cool down on hot days, then head back to the sand or cubby house for more adventures. You’ll definitely want to pack a change of clothes or a towel if your children are drawn to water play – and most are!
Practical touches make the experience easier for parents and carers. There is a dedicated hand washing, sanitising and sunscreen station nearby, so you can quickly clean up sandy hands or top up the SPF without leaving the area. Toilets and a parent room are also located close by, which is a lifesaver with little ones.
The West Deck itself has been designed as a social, family-friendly dining and entertainment hub. Next to The Cubby is a lovely grassed area with tables and benches, giving you a relaxed space to sit while the kids play. You can bring your own picnic or grab takeaway from the surrounding eateries. Family favourites nearby include The British Chippy (perfect for an easy fish and chips dinner), San Churro, Grill’d, Billy Van Creamy and Pretzel, making it very simple to turn a quick play into a full family outing.
Access is straightforward, with the best parking for The Cubby and the West Deck being the West Multi-Deck Car Park, which you can reach directly from Karrinyup Road. From there it’s just a short walk to the play area and restaurants, so you’re not juggling kids and bags for long distances.
