Tucked just behind Subiaco Arts Centre on Hamersley Road, Theatre Gardens Playspace feels like a little green escape in the middle of busy Subi. Mature trees, wide lawns and a meandering creek make this a gorgeous spot for kids to burn off energy while grown-ups relax under the shade.
The centrepiece of the playspace is the water play. A fountain at the top of the area feeds a trickling brook that winds its way down through rocks and channels. Kids can experiment with building dams, blocking the flow and then lifting the hatches to release a rush of water. The stream empties into a generous sandpit, perfect for toy trucks, sandcastles or just dipping little toes on a warm day. Bring a change of clothes – most kids won’t stay dry for long.
Nature play is woven right through the Playground. A timber and rope climbing structure offers plenty of challenge, with balancing beams, monkey bars and logs to clamber over. It’s the kind of space where children can test their coordination and confidence, choosing whether to take the easy route or push themselves a bit higher.
There’s also a super-slick slide that’s always popular, with many kids racing back up for “just one more” turn.
In keeping with the location, there’s a charming nod to the arts. A small stage-style area invites mini performers to put on shows, sing, dance or act out their own stories. It’s a lovely touch, especially if you’ve just visited the Subiaco Arts Centre and the kids are still feeling inspired by the theatre vibe.
You’ll also find a saucer (basket) swing that suits a wide range of ages – little ones can lie back with a parent, while older children enjoy spinning or swinging with friends. Scattered benches give caregivers plenty of spots to sit and supervise, and the surrounding lawns are ideal for a picnic rug or a casual game of chasey or ball. Paths through the park are pram‑friendly, and there is good tree cover for much of the day.
Being so close to Rokeby Road and the heart of Subiaco, it’s easy to combine a Playground visit with a coffee stop or some shopping. On Saturday mornings, Subi Farmers Market runs just up the road at Subiaco Primary School, making this a handy spot to wander to afterwards for a relaxed play and picnic. Parking is available at and around the Subiaco Arts Centre, with free parking in Subiaco on weekends and after hours.
Whether you pop in after a show at the arts centre, stop by after the markets, or make it a destination all of its own, Subiaco Theatre Gardens Playspace is a beautiful, leafy spot that encourages kids to slow down, get their hands sandy and wet, and enjoy creative nature play in the middle of the city.
