Shirley Strickland Reserve in Ardross is a fantastic family-friendly spot that combines a nature-inspired Playground with a large, dog-friendly sporting reserve. The space brings together a Sport and Community Pavilion, fitness equipment and a shared walking and cycling path around the ovals, making it a great destination for active kids and parents alike.

The hero of the Playground is the huge multilevel wooden climbing structure, topped with a bright lime green slide that kids spot as soon as they arrive. Confident climbers can head up via various ladders and climbing elements, then race each other across the bridge before zooming down the slide.

From the top there are lovely views over the sporting ovals, so itโs easy to keep an eye on older kids while you relax below.

At ground level, the play area focuses on nature play. Children can hop along brightly painted stepping poles, balance on beams, tackle stone steppers and play in a wooden teepee thatโs perfect for imaginative games. These elements are ideal for younger children who might not be ready for the big tower but still want to climb, balance and explore at their own pace.

Little ones are also catered for with a small concrete slide built into the landscape, speaking tubes for secret messages and simple music and sensory play features. These lower-level activities allow toddlers to enjoy the space independently while older siblings head for the more challenging equipment nearby.

There are three swings, including a basket swing thatโs great for group play or a parent and baby together, plus two traditional swings.

A playful winnersโ podium encourages a bit of friendly competition, and itโs easy to set up obstacle courses and timed challenges using all the stepping stones, balance beams and other features scattered around the Playground.

Older kids and teens can make use of the half-basketball court, perfect for practising shooting hoops or playing a casual game with friends. Close to the car park youโll find outdoor fitness equipment, giving adults and bigger kids a chance to squeeze in some exercise while younger children play. A shared walking and cycling path loops around the reserve, making it a pleasant spot for scooters, bikes or a family walk with the dog.

Picnic facilities include picnic tables and BBQs, so itโs simple to turn a quick visit into a longer stay. The Sport and Community Pavilion includes a canteen (typically open on most weekends when sport is on), public toilets and changing facilities, which is a big plus for families with young children. There are no shade sails, but the Playground sits beneath established trees that provide plenty of natural shade across much of the area.

Overall, Shirley Strickland Reserve is a welcoming community space that works well for a wide age range. With nature play, a standout climbing tower and slide, sports facilities, fitness equipment, dog-friendly ovals and handy amenities, itโs an excellent choice for a relaxed family outing in the City of Melville.
