Nestled within the beautifully revitalised Elizabeth Baillie Park in East Victoria Park, the Mildred Creak Playground is fast becoming one of Perth’s most beloved family destinations. Named in honour of Mildred Creak — a pioneering child psychiatrist whose groundbreaking work helped shape early diagnostic criteria for autism — this Playground has been thoughtfully designed with inclusivity, creativity and community at its heart. It offers a genuinely welcoming space where children of all abilities can come together to play, explore and connect.

The Playground sits at the centre of the park’s impressive $8.1 million transformation, which was delivered by the Town of Victoria Park between February 2025 and March 2026. The purpose-built play area was designed in collaboration with the Autism Association of WA, with a strong focus on accessible design and sensory experiences that allow children with different needs and abilities to enjoy the space comfortably. The project also received significant support from Lotterywest, which contributed a $2.2 million grant towards both the Mildred Creak Playground and the Changing Places facility, while the broader precinct redevelopment received $4 million in funding from the Australian Government.

Inside the fully fenced play area, children can explore a variety of zones tailored to their individual needs — from calm, quiet spaces to a nature play area and equipment that promotes balance and gross motor skills.

One of the standout features is the impressive Play Line, a long stretch of interconnected play elements including swings, a play net, a climbing wall, a balance walk and a ninja wall.

Children will love putting their climbing, balancing, jumping and sliding skills to the test as they attempt to travel the entire length of this exciting structure.

For younger toddlers, there is a sand table with a small water feature — a simple but delightful spot for sensory play.

The nature play area is equally charming, featuring a Grid Walk with a pattern wall and bridge crossings made from fallen trees and timber logs.

Children can explore their surroundings, build their own tepees or take a quiet moment inside the Cubby Domes — a lovely touch for those who need a calm retreat.

Children seeking sensory engagement will find plenty to keep them busy, with a giant Spinner table, Roller table, Seesaw, Cocoon, inclusive Carousel, Rope Hammock and Activity Panels all on offer.

A Communication board is also available for those who need it, reflecting the Playground’s deep commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

Shaded seating is dotted throughout the Playground, making it a wonderful spot for a playdate or a relaxed afternoon with the family.

Beyond the Playground itself, Elizabeth Baillie Park has much more to offer. Families can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the park and learn about the rich history of the Elizabeth Baillie Precinct — a site that has played a significant role in Perth’s healthcare and community history since 1911.

The park features BBQ facilities, accessible pathways, a dedicated space for indigenous art, an outdoor amphitheatre perfect for performances and community events, and open lawn areas ideal for picnics. A fully accessible Changing Places facility and public toilets are located within the park, with limited parking available around the site.

And just a stone’s throw away, families can also explore the brand new Baillie Hill hospitality precinct, which brings together cafés, dining, a bar, gelato, wood-fired pizza and more within the beautifully restored heritage buildings.
