A Day in the Life of a Murdoch University Student 2025

Do you want to experience a day in the life of a Murdoch University student?
If you are currently in Year 9 or 10, A Day in the Life of a Murdoch University Student is the perfect opportunity for you to explore your interests and where these might lead you. You will create a customised university timetable based on subjects of interest, speak with current Murdoch University students about their study journey and be inspired by our academics.
Please note: When registering, the form must be completed by the parent/guardian of any Year 9 or 10 high school student (age 14-16) wanting to attend ‘A Day in the Life of a Murdoch University Student’ and is required for entry to the event. This event will run on both Tuesday 30th September and Wednesday 1st October 2025. Please choose only one day to attend. The program is identical on both days.

Forensic Science – Facial Approximation
Facial approximation combines the principles of anatomy, osteology, anthropology and art to recreate a face from skeletal remains (the skull). It is often of assistance in police investigations to aid in identification of a victim. In this workshop, you will learn about the important facial muscles and tissues, then create representations of these using clay.

Health – Functional Anatomy Explorers
Get ready to explore the functional anatomy of your body! In this hands-on workshop, broaden your knowledge of the human body and discover the amazing roles your musculoskeletal system plays in everything from sitting to dancing. Along the way you’ll challenge your understanding of how movement is vital for your overall health and wellbeing. Join us and see how your body is built for action and health!
IT – Let’s Get Rolling, Let’s Get Coding
A two part introduction to robotics programming, students use Spheros to learn basic programming strategies through a series of competition style tasks.
Physical Sciences – Chemical Rockets
In this workshop, you will exploit an acid base reaction to propel a rocket into the air. You will first learn of the physics that underpins both rocket launch and flight, and the importance of weight versus thrust. With this knowledge, you will explore different ratios of acid and base quantities and the effect this has on maximum height achieved.

Environmental Science – Wetlands Tour
Come and explore the Chelodina Wetland and discover what it’s like to study Environmental Science or Conservation and Wildlife Biology. You will complete field tasks to identify various types of flora and fauna, observe food chains and discuss the cycle of abiotic and non-abiotic elements of an ecosystem.

Podcasting – Record a Podcast (In Studio)
In this workshop, you will put into practice the skills of asking open-ended questions and engaging in active listening, in order to generate interesting discussion around a given topic. You will learn the difference between recorded levels and monitoring (headphone) levels, and will learn the basics of operating a professional Podcast Studio.
Criminology – Forward Profiling
Explore the interesting world of criminology, a branch of science involving sociology, psychology and law enforcement. In this workshop, you will explore the following questions – Can we predict criminal behaviours? What are the red flags for potential future offending? How can childhood experiences contribute to future behaviours and what can we do to prevent them?
Politics – How to Win an Election
Have you ever wanted to win an election? What is actually needed for you to step up and work in the Lower House of Australia? In this workshop, we will run a series of elections to discover who will be “Murdoch Class Champion,” all while seeing what goes on behind the ballot boxes.

Food Science & Nutrition – Nutrition Sleuths: Crack the Code Break Out Box
Unlock the secrets of food science and nutrition through the eyes of a budding nutritionist! You will sharpen your problem-solving skills while using your expertise in nutrition labels and macronutrients to tackle a series of challenging puzzles. By applying your knowledge of balanced diets and nutritional information, you will crack codes and unlock the box.
Psychology – Facial Expressions
Ever wondered what someone’s thinking just by looking at their face? Students will harness their understanding of emotions to explore the subtle facial cues associated with different emotions. Join us as we challenge perceptions and cultivate a deeper understanding of the complex world of human emotions.
Engineering – Future Builders: Environmental Engineering in Action
Step into the world of sustainable innovation with Murdoch University’s immersive Environmental Engineering workshop. This interactive session is designed for curious minds eager to tackle real-world environmental challenges through engineering solutions.
Veterinary Science – Mystery Skulls
Can you identify the different features on the skulls of various species of animals? Test your knowledge on animal anatomy while visiting the Veterinary & Anatomy Museum. The museum features various specimens including equine, bovine, porcine, canine and feline, as well as body systems, such as cardiovascular and nervous systems.
Screen Production – TV Studio: Live Panel Show
In this workshop, you will learn the technical aspects of operating a TV studio, including the specific roles found on the studio floor (camera, lighting, floor manager, presenter, talent) and in the control room (director, switcher, sound, auto prompt, video playback). You will work as a team to create a 5-minute live panel show, complete with titles, music and video.
Photography – Articifical Intelligence in Photoshop
This workshop encourages you to think about how AI is being implemented in creative industries and discuss the ethics and morality behind these technologies. You will also explore some of the newly installed AI components in Photoshop (Adobe Fifefly) to learn how images can be generated from simple text prompts.
Law – Mock Trial
In this activity we run through a simple mock trial situation. Students will learn about the onus of prosecution and defence, and the types of issues that can and cannot be brought before a jury. Students will fill the roles of jury members as they watch Murdoch Law students take part in a simulation of a legal trial. Students will be asked to pass their verdict on the trial.
Business – Game Theory
In this fun, interesting and interactive workshop, you will be exposed to the basics of the mathematical model known as Game Theory. This science of logical decision making is an important part of economics and social sciences. You will learn and gain understanding of concepts of Zero-sum games, the Nash Equilibrium, Homo Economicus and see versions of this theory in popular culture and the real world.

Forensics – Murder Mystery Break Out Box
This immersive game experience allows you to test your knowledge of forensic science as you play detective and work as a team to establish the identity of the individual responsible for your colleague’s disappearance and the murder of Taylor Potts. You will interpret biological evidence (blood, DNA) as well as shoeprint and fingerprint evidence to unlock the different locks and acquire the missing suspect files.
Allied Health – Movement Matters Most
Your body was made to move—so what happens when it doesn’t? Students explore how physical activity supports healthy body function and overall wellbeing. They’ll investigate the Australian exercise recommendations, develop an understanding of heart rate training zones, and consider how the body responds to different levels of movement.
Agricultural Science – All Sheeps and Sizes
The health of livestock animals is a crucial concern for farmers, both to maintain animal wellbeing and to maximise economic return. This workshop teaches students what farmers want in a healthy sheep, and tasks students with ‘breeding’ successive generations of sheep to produce an optimal offspring.
Cyber Security – Break Out Box
Unlock the secrets of cyber security in our thrilling Breakout Box workshop! Dive into an interactive adventure where you’ll tackle engaging puzzles and challenges that blend logic gates, ciphers, and conditional statements. Are you ready to crack the code and secure the digital world? Join us and put your skills to the ultimate test!
Marine Science – Marine Biodiversity
Do you know what lives in the ocean other than fish? In this workshop, you will explore a range of marine lives and learn about how they interact with each other and with the environment (without getting your hair wet!)

Games Art & Design – Pixel Art
Pixel Art is probably one of the most simple art styles, however creating a compelling design can sometimes be challenging. This workshop will teach you about the history of Pixel Art in game design and show you how to use this knowledge to create your own retro self-portrait or design of your favourite character using the website Pixilart.
Graphic Design – Ideation
Ideation is the design process of developing project concepts using creative methods such as sketching, prototyping, brainstorming and many other thought provoking strategies. During this workshop, participants will engage in creative techniques for producing bold, innovative ideas that can literally change the world!
Journalism – News: Finding Stories in the Community
In this session, you will learn the craft of finding news stories in the world around you. The world is full of disinformation and competing priorities, and you will be empowered to discern what stories need to be told and which ones to avoid. This workshop will give you a hands-on experience at finding, evaluating, and engaging with news and community effectively.
