A day out with the family sounds wholesome, doesn’t it? Anyone who said yes doesn’t have a family. The reality is, a snippet of it is wholesome; the rest of it is making sure you haven’t lost anyone, wondering why your child is crying, listening to another saying they want to go home, and trying to clean up the drink another has spilt down themselves.

Sorry, we made that sound bad—it is fun and wholesome, we promise. That said, it can be a bit of a worry, especially if you’re somewhere you don’t know and have older kids who want to venture off on their own for an hour to explore. From walkie-talkies (how 90s of us) to eSIMs, read on for our tips on staying in communication on a family day trip.

Find a Fast and Reliable eSIM

The first thing you should do before you even go to a new country is get an eSIM. Don’t wait until you arrive and awkwardly use Wi-Fi to quickly Google and install an eSIM. Whether you need an eSIM for New Zealand or Australia, Holafly is one of the best providers, in our opinion, and the download and installation process is really easy.

Everyone who is old enough to have a phone should also have an eSIM—all you have to do is select the number of eSIMs you need at checkout.

Have Fun With Walkie-Talkies

Not everyone in your family will be old enough to have a phone, and we understand that sometimes they might want to play in the park whilst you’re having a drink and enjoying the sun (within view; don’t call us bad parents).

We’d recommend having some fun with walkie-talkies. As kids are, they might wander slightly out of view, and we know that if you were to say something through the walkie-talkie, they’d love it.

Some higher-end models designed for outdoor use can reach up to 15 kilometres, so if you are going for a day trip hiking with older children who want to explore a different area while you take a break, you can stay in touch with the walkie-talkie.

Agreed Meeting Places and Times

Again, if you’re planning a day trip, some of your children might want to wander off and do their own thing. We’re sure as parents that you’ll appreciate a little alone time, and if they’re old enough to do that and they have a phone with a reliable eSIM, always set an agreed meeting place and time.

If they’re not there at the agreed time, or just a little bit after, it’s a quick signal you need to try to find them. Hopefully their phone is on, and they’re not too far away!

There are enough things to stress about on a family day trip, so don’t let communication be another thing to worry about. You’ve got plenty of options, so we hope the most you have to stress about is where to eat to keep everyone happy, including the picky eaters!
