From the award-winning theatre production Barking Gecko Theatre, House returns on stage for a short period of time this November at Octagon Theatre in the University of Western Australia following their successful show in 2021. Featuring a cast of charming characters and a magical flying house, this production is set to enchant the whole family and set your imaginations soaring!
Brought to life by Playwright Dan Giovannoni and Director Luke Kerridge (the duo behind the Helpmann Award-winning stage hit Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories), House is a modern-day escapade filled with many heartfelt moments and tells a hilarious tale of loneliness and belonging.
House follows the story of Cathelijin (pronounced as Cat-a-line), who finds herself alone in the dark forest with nobody to help her. In the midst of a raging storm, she sees a house as tall as the trees. Inside, she meets Piotr, a small boy who is brimming with energy and a grey-haired explorer, Elkra. When suddenly, the house launched itself into the air and across the sky. Soon, Cathelijin discovers that this is no ordinary house, it’s a rescue house set to rescue the loneliest child in the world! An extraordinary adventure begins that will take Cathelijin across the world as we journey with her on her voyage of self-discovery and independence.
The captivating set is a masterpiece by Set and Costume Designer Charlotte Lane. The larger-than-life set is one that you do not usually see for a local theatre production. Watch as Contraptions Designer Philip Millar bedazzles the audience with magical surprises at every corner of the house, which the children absolutely love! Missy 6 was intrigued to see that the cooktop became a cockpit!! Together with Lighting Designer Richard Vabre and Composer and Sound Designer Rachael Dease, it beautifully creates a whimsical experience for the whole family to enjoy.
Chanella Macri who plays the heroic character Cathelijin wonderfully portrayed her character’s boldness that pulls at one’s heartstrings.
Issac Diamond beautifully captured the comedic essence of Piotr, which is both hilarious and frantic to watch.
The talented veteran performer Nicola Bartlett breathes life into her character, Elka, as she shines through with her silliness and seriousness.
House delicately talks about how “unfit” Cathelijin feels in her world and that nobody understands her, and how Piotr and Elkra, too, have something worrying them, which is so relatable to all of us. With its key theme around friendship, loneliness and resilience, House is a safe haven for everyone as we learn to find our places in this world. This spoke to me very strongly as a parent and encourages discussion around the topic of loneliness and resilience to our children in today’s world. Children ages 8 and above will be able to follow through the play and have a laugh enjoying the production. Run time of the play is 75 mins in total and does contain haze effects, flashing lights and loud sound effects.
This live stage production also coincides with the release of the book version of House by Fremantle Press, which is available now for purchase here.
Book your tickets here before House finishes on 9th November.
